Southern Sotho Vocabulary - Feelings and Emotions

Hi Southern Sotho learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be learning about the different feelings and emotions in Southern Sotho, along with their pronunciations and English translations. Emotions are a universal language that we all share, and being able to express ourselves effectively is key to developing strong relationships with others. Let's start with the basics. Here are some common emotions and feelings that we all experience:

Buelelong buɛlɛloŋ Sadness
Fumaneha fumaneha Excitement
Lumella lumɛlla Anger
Tloha ɬɔha Fear
Kholo kʰɔlɔ Love

Here's an example dialogue using some of these words:

  • Person 1: Ke hlahlobang. (I am happy.)
  • Person 2: Ke hlahlobang haholo-holo. (I am very happy.)

Now that we know the basics, let's move on to some more complex emotions and feelings:

Let's try another dialogue using some of these words:

  • Person 1: Ke hlokahala ka bohlokoa. (I feel nostalgic.)
  • Person 2: Ke tseleng bohlokoa joang? (Why are you feeling nostalgic?)
