In this lesson, you will learn how to use question words in Faroese to form questions. You will also learn how to use the question words in context and practice forming questions.

Question Words

In Faroese, question words are used to ask questions about specific information. The main question words in Faroese are:

  • Hvat - What
  • Hvar - Where
  • Nær - When
  • Hvør - Who
  • Hvussu - How
  • Hví - Why

These words are very important when asking questions in Faroese, and you will see them used in various situations.

Using Question Words in Questions

To form a question in Faroese, the word order is changed from the usual SVO (Subject-Verb-Object) order. In a question, the verb comes before the subject. To ask a question using one of the question words, you simply insert the question word in front of the verb.

Examples:

  • Hvat etur tú? - What are you eating?
  • Hvar býrir tú? - Where do you live?
  • Nær ferstu heim? - When are you going home?
  • Hvør er hann? - Who is he?
  • Hvussu fer tað? - How does it work?
  • Hví býrt tú í Føroyum? - Why do you live in the Faroe Islands?

As you can see from the examples above, the verb is placed at the beginning of the question, followed by the subject and the question word. This word order is used in all types of questions in Faroese.

Practice Questions

Now, let's practice forming questions using the Faroese question words. Look at the following statements and try to turn them into questions by reordering the words and adding a question word.

For example:

Statement: Hann býr í Tórshavn. Question: Hvar býr hann?

1. Eg les bók. 2. Hann fer út at syngja. 3. Tú hevur eitt nú gott lív. 4. Hann er føddur í 1990. 5. Vit fara til Københavns í morgin.

Answers:

1. Hvat les tú? 2. Hvar fer hann út at syngja? 3. Hvussu hevur tú eitt gott lív? 4. Nær er hann føddur? 5. Hvar fara vit í morgin?

More Question Words

Here are some additional words that can be used to ask questions in Faroese:

  • Hvarðan - From where
  • Hvat fyri - What kind of
  • Hvat eitt - Which
  • Um/hvat - About what

Examples:

  • Hvarðan ert tú? - Where are you from?
  • Hvat fyri bók lesur tú? - What kind of book are you reading?
  • Hvat eitt hús er tað? - Which house is it?
  • Um/hvat talar tit? - What are you talking about?

In addition to the main question words, these words can help you ask even more specific questions in Faroese.
