What are subject pronouns?
Subject pronouns are words used to replace the subject in a sentence. A subject is the person or people, animal, or thing that performs the action of the verb. Using subject pronouns helps to simplify sentences and make them more concise.
Here are some examples of sentences with and without subject pronouns:
- Without subject pronouns: "Rebaz ate a sandwich."
- With subject pronouns: "He ate a sandwich."
As you can see, using subject pronouns makes the sentence shorter and more direct. Additionally, it helps to avoid repetition of the subject's name or noun.
In Central Kurdish, subject pronouns are used extensively and are an essential part of the language.
Here are the subject pronouns in Central Kurdish:
Central Kurdish | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ez | ɛz | I |
tu | tˤʊ | You (singular) |
ew | ɛw | He/She/It |
em | ɛm | We |
hûn | huːn | You (plural) |
ewan | ɛwan | They (masc.) |
ewên | ɛwɛn | They (fem.) |
Note that the same pronoun "ew" can be used for he, she, or it. The plural forms of "ew" are "ewan" for masculine and "ewên" for feminine.
That being said, let's move on to understanding how subject pronouns are used in sentences.
Using subject pronouns
Subject pronouns are used at the beginning of a sentence to describe the person or people performing the action of the verb.
Here are some examples of sentences using subject pronouns:
- "Ez li ser xwîna xwe mezin dibim." (I drink my big cup of tea.)
- "Tu rexne dikî." (You study.)
- "Ew çû." (He/She/It went.)
- "Em navê we zanin." (We know your name.)
- "Hûn bi mala min re here." (You come to my house.)
- "Ewan xwîna xwe bi te ra didin." (They offer you their blood.)
- "Ewên xwîna xwe didin me." (They offer us their blood.)
Notice that the first word in every sentence is the subject pronoun. This helps to identify who is performing the action.
