Telling Time in Norwegian Bokmål

How to Tell the Time

In Norwegian Bokmål, the 24-hour clock is used. To tell the time, you need to know the words for the hours and minutes. Here are the words for the hours:

Norwegian Bokmål Pronunciation English Translation
null [nʉl] 12:00 midnight
en [ɛn] 1
to [tuː] 2
tre [treː] 3
fire [fiːrə] 4
fem [fɛm] 5
seks [sɛks] 6
sju [ʃʉː] 7
åtte [ɔtə] 8
ni [niː] 9
ti [tiː] 10
elleve [ɛlɛvə] 11
tolv [tɔlv] 12:00 noon

To express minutes, use the word "over" (past) or "på" (to) followed by the number of minutes. For example:

  • klokken er fem over ni - it is five minutes past nine
  • klokken er ti på halv to - it is ten minutes to one and a half (half past twelve)

Note that when telling the time in Norwegian Bokmål, the hour always comes first, followed by the minutes. Also, "på halv" (at half) is used to express "half past," as seen in the example above.

Here are some more examples:

Norwegian Bokmål English Translation
klokken er ett it is one o'clock
klokken er tolv over ti it is twelve minutes past ten
klokken er halv tolv it is half past eleven
