Assamese Vocabulary - Days of the Week

Hi Assamese learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn the days of the week in Assamese. Not only will you learn new vocabulary, but also interesting cultural facts related to the days of the week in Assam. Let's dive in!

Days of the Week

In Assamese, the days of the week are named after celestial bodies or deities. The concept of naming days after celestial bodies is not unique to Assam and is shared by many cultures worldwide. The table below shows the days of the week in Assamese and their English translations:

Assamese Pronunciation English
সোমবাৰ (Sombar) /sɒmbɒɹ/ Monday
মঙ্গলবাৰ (Mongolbar) /mɔŋɡɔlbɒɹ/ Tuesday
বুধবাৰ (Budhbar) /budʱbɒɹ/ Wednesday
বৃহস্পতিবাৰ (Brihoshpotibar) /brihɔʃpɒtibɒɹ/ Thursday
শুক্ৰবাৰ (Sukrubar) /ʃukɹubɒɹ/ Friday
শনিৰবাৰ (Saniarbar) /sɔniɹbɒɹ/ Saturday
দেউবাৰ (Deubar) /deubɒɹ/ Sunday

As you can see, Assamese days of the week have unique names. For instance, "Sombar", the Assamese name for Monday, is named after the Moon. Similarly, Tuesday is named after Mars, and "Mangal" is the Hindi and Sanskrit word for Mars 🪐.

Let's practice the pronunciation of the days of the week with a dialogue:

  • Person 1: আজি কেদিক হলে? (Aji kedik hole?) (What day is it today?)
  • Person 2: আজি বুধবাৰ। (Aji Budhbar.) (Today is Wednesday.)

Fun fact

In Assam, Sunday is also known as "Deu-sup", which means worship day. It is customary to visit temples and offer prayers on this day. Many people also fast on this day and consume only vegetarian food.
