Hi Assamese learners! 😊
In this lesson, we are going to learn Assamese Vocabulary related to Family. Assamese is spoken in Assam, a state in Northeast India. It has its roots in Indo-Aryan languages and has been influenced by its neighboring languages, such as Bengali and Bodo. Assamese is a fun language to learn, and its vocabulary is rich in culture and history. Assamese is known for its use of honorifics, which are terms of respect that are used when addressing people who are older or have higher social status.

Family Vocabulary[edit | edit source]

Assamese has a unique way of addressing family members based on their relationships. In the Assamese language, grandparents are honored by calling them "Aita" for Grandpa and "Aitu" for Grandma. Similarly, uncles and aunts are called "Koka/Kakimoni" (paternal uncles/aunts) and "Dadai" (maternal aunts) and "Mami" (maternal uncles). The table below will help you to understand how to address your relatives.

- Assam is known for its beautiful tea gardens which are some of the largest in the world, and tea is one of its biggest exports. - Assam silk, known as "pat" in Assamese, is a luxurious silk that has been crafted for centuries in the region, and it is a popular choice for wedding saris. - Bihu is the most famous festival for Assamese people. It is a set of three harvest festivals celebrated in different parts of Assam in the months of January, April, and October.
