Central Pashto Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Central Pashto learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Central Pashto. We will look at the different forms of the verb and how to use them in sentences.

The verb "be" is used to describe a state or condition. In Central Pashto, it is conjugated differently depending on the subject of the sentence. The verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

Person Singular Plural
I بوم بیم
You (singular) ته تی
He/She/It یه يی
We بیم بیم
You (plural) تی تی
They يی يی

Let's look at some examples of how to use the verb "be" in Central Pashto.

  • Person 1: زه بوم؟ (Za bam?)

Translation: Am I?

  • Person 2: نه، ته بوی (Na, ta bawi)

Translation: No, you are.

  • Person 1: زه يه خوب؟ (Za yah khob?)

Translation: Am I good?

  • Person 2: هو، ته خوب بوی (Haw, ta khob bawi)

Translation: Yes, you are good.

  • Person 1: زه بیم؟ (Za bim?)

Translation: Are we?

  • Person 2: هو، بیم بوی (Haw, bim bawi)

Translation: Yes, we are.

Now that you know how to use the verb "be" in Central Pashto, let's practice using it in sentences.

  • Person 1: ته دلیل بوی؟ (Ta daleel bawi?)

Translation: Are you a teacher?

  • Person 2: هو، زه دلیل نه بوم (Haw, za daleel na bam)

Translation: Yes, I am not a teacher.

  • Person 1: زه يه دوست؟ (Za yah dost?)

Translation: Am I a friend?

  • Person 2: هو، زه دوست بوی (Haw, za dost bawi)

Translation: Yes, you are a friend.

  • Person 1: تی يی دوستان؟ (Ti yi dostan?)

Translation: Are you (plural) friends?

  • Person 2: هو، تی يی دوستان بوی (Haw, ti yi dostan bawi)

Translation: Yes, you (plural) are friends.
