Georgian Grammar - How to Use "Be"

In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Georgian. We will look at the conjugation of the verb and how it is used in different contexts.

The verb "be" in Georgian is แƒ˜แƒงแƒแƒก (ikos). It is an irregular verb, which means that it does not follow the same conjugation pattern as other verbs. The conjugation of the verb "be" in Georgian is as follows:

The verb "be" is used in many different contexts. Here are some examples of how it is used:

  • To describe a person's identity:

Person 1: แƒ แƒ แƒฎแƒแƒ ? (ra xar?) - What are you? Person 2: แƒ›แƒ” แƒ›แƒแƒ’แƒ˜แƒกแƒขแƒ แƒ˜ แƒ•แƒ˜แƒงแƒ. (me magistri vikos) - I am a teacher.

  • To describe a person's location:

Person 1: แƒกแƒแƒ“ แƒฎแƒแƒ ? (sad xar?) - Where are you? Person 2: แƒ›แƒ” แƒกแƒแƒฅแƒแƒ แƒ—แƒ•แƒ”แƒšแƒแƒจแƒ˜ แƒ•แƒ˜แƒงแƒ. (me sakartveloshi vikos) - I am in Georgia.

  • To describe a person's occupation:

Person 1: แƒ แƒ แƒ›แƒฃแƒจแƒแƒแƒ‘แƒก? (ra muxaobas?) - What do you do? Person 2: แƒ›แƒ” แƒ›แƒแƒ’แƒ˜แƒกแƒขแƒ แƒ˜ แƒ•แƒ˜แƒงแƒ. (me magistri vikos) - I am a teacher.

  • To describe a person's age:

Person 1: แƒ แƒ แƒแƒกแƒแƒ™แƒ˜ แƒฎแƒแƒ ? (ra asaki xar?) - How old are you? Person 2: แƒ›แƒ” แƒแƒ—แƒฎแƒจแƒแƒ‘แƒแƒ—แƒก แƒ•แƒ˜แƒงแƒ. (me otxshabats vikos) - I am 18 years old.

  • To describe a person's nationality:

Person 1: แƒ แƒ แƒฅแƒ•แƒ”แƒงแƒแƒœแƒแƒ“ แƒฎแƒแƒ ? (ra kveqanad xar?) - What nationality are you? Person 2: แƒ›แƒ” แƒฅแƒแƒ แƒ—แƒ•แƒ”แƒšแƒ˜ แƒ•แƒ˜แƒงแƒ. (me kartveli vikos) - I am Georgian.

  • To describe a person's gender:

Person 1: แƒ แƒ แƒกแƒฅแƒ”แƒกแƒ˜แƒ— แƒฎแƒแƒ ? (ra sqesit xar?) - What gender are you? Person 2: แƒ›แƒ” แƒ›แƒแƒ›แƒ แƒแƒ‘แƒ˜แƒ—แƒ˜ แƒ•แƒ˜แƒงแƒ. (me mamrobilit vikos) - I am male.
