Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn the Pashto numbers from 1 to 10. You will also learn how to write them in the Pashto script and practice their pronunciation.

Counting is an essential skill when learning a new language. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use these numbers in everyday communication, such as telling the time, giving phone numbers, and talking about quantities.

Note: In Pashto, there are different variations of numbers depending on gender and countable versus uncountable nouns. In this lesson, we will only focus on the basic form of numbers 1-10.

Numbers 1-10

Central Pashto Pronunciation English
یو yao One
دو do Two
درې dre Three
څلور chalor Four
پنځ panj Five
شپې shpae Six
اووه awa Seven
اطو ataw Eight
نه no Nine
ده dah Ten

Examples:

  • I have two apples. - زه دو څوکېرو دی (za do tsukeru di)
  • She has five brothers. - هغه پنځ برادر لری (hagha panj baradar lari)
  • They are seven people. - یووه افراد دی (yawwa afrad di)

Pashto Script

The Pashto script is written from right to left, and the numbers are no exception. However, unlike the numbers in English, they are not written horizontally but vertically.

Here are the Pashto numerals for 1-10:

Practice

Now, it's time to practice your pronunciation and writing skills. Take a pen and a piece of paper and write down the numbers from 1 to 10 in Pashto script. Then, try to read them out loud several times until you feel confident with their pronunciation.

Here are some exercises to help you practice:

  • Say the numbers in Pashto from 1 to 10, then repeat them backwards.
  • Ask a friend to give you a random number from 1 to 10, and you have to say it out loud in Pashto.
  • Write down numbers on separate pieces of paper, shuffle them, and then pick them randomly, saying its Pashto equivalent out loud.
