In Malayalam, colors are mostly named based on objects or nature. For instance, പച്ച (pacha) means green, and it is named after the leaves of plants.
Shades[edit | edit source]
When we refer to different shades of the same color, we can use the following terms.

- Person 2: താങ്കൾക്ക് മഞ്ഞ മൂന്നു കൂടാതെ തന്നിട്ടുണ്ട് (thaangalkku mannyu moonnu koodaathe thannittundu) (We don't have more than two yellows for you)
- Person 1: ഞാൻ സംഗീനിക ഉഷ്ണം പോലെ ഒരു അളവ് വേണം (naan sangeenika ushnamm pole oru alavu venam) (I want a shade of purple like heat)
- Person 2: ഇത് പച്ച തുറന്ന പൂവിന്റെ നിറം (ith pacha thuranna poovinte niram) (This is the color of an open flower)
