Olá, students! In this lesson, we will be discussing the Conditional Tense in Portuguese. This tense is used to express hypothetical situations or events that are dependent on a certain condition. It is also used to express courtesy, requests or suggestions in a polite manner.
- Formation
The Conditional Tense is formed by taking the infinitive of the verb, adding the conditional conjugation endings to the end. The same endings are used for all three verb conjugation classes (-ar, -er, and -ir).
Here are the endings:
-ia -ias -ia -íamos -íeis -iam
- Examples
Here are some examples of the Conditional Tense in use (note that the infinitive verb forms have been underlined):
Eu estudaria mais se tivesse mais tempo. (I would study more if I had more time.)
Se eu tivesse dinheiro, eu compraria um carro novo. (If I had money, I would buy a new car.)
Você aceitaria um emprego no exterior? (Would you accept a job abroad?)
- Irregular Verbs
As with the Future Tense, there are some irregular verbs in the Conditional Tense. They follow the same pattern as the Future tense, meaning that their stems are the same as the conditional endings.
Here are some examples of irregular verbs:
| Portuguese || Pronunciation || English| |----|----|----| | teria | te-ree-a | would have | | seria | se-ree-a | would be | | poderia | po-de-ree-a | could | | saberia | sa-be-ree-a | would know |
- Examples
Here are some examples of the Conditional Tense with irregular verbs:
Eu teria ido ao cinema ontem, mas estava doente. (I would have gone to the cinema yesterday, but I was sick.)
Se ela soubesse a verdade, teria reagido diferente. (If she knew the truth, she would have reacted differently.)
- Use
The Conditional Tense can be used in a variety of situations, including:
- To express hypothetical situations or events that depend on a certain condition - To express politeness when making a request, suggestion, or giving advice - To speculate or guess about a situation
- Examples
Here are some examples of the Conditional Tense in use:
Se eu pudesse, eu viajaria o mundo inteiro. (If I could, I would travel the whole world.)
Você me ajudaria com essa tarefa, por favor? (Would you help me with this task, please?)
Se fosse você, eu faria a mesma coisa. (If I were you, I would do the same thing.)
- Conclusion
In conclusion, the Conditional Tense is a useful and versatile tense in Portuguese. It is relatively easy to form and has a variety of uses. With practice, you'll be using it like a pro in no time!
Boa sorte! (Good luck!)
