As a Thai language teacher with 20 years of experience, I am excited to teach you about the days of the week and months in Thai. This is a crucial part of daily conversation and I will provide cultural information and interesting facts along the way.
Days of the Week
Thai language has a unique system for the days of the week, as they are named after celestial bodies:
Thai | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
วันอาทิตย์ | wan aa-tit | Sunday |
วันจันทร์ | wan jan | Monday |
วันอังคาร | wan ang-kaan | Tuesday |
วันพุธ | wan put | Wednesday |
วันพฤหัสบดี | wan pheu-rueat-hat-sa-ba-dee | Thursday |
วันศุกร์ | wan suk | Friday |
วันเสาร์ | wan sao | Saturday |
Did you know that Thai people often wear clothes in the color associated with the day of the week they were born on? This is called "sukjai" and is believed to bring good luck.
Months
The names of the months in Thai are influenced by Sanskrit, and are also named after celestial bodies:
Thai | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
เดือนมกราคม | deuan mok-gara-kom | January |
เดือนกุมภาพันธ์ | deuan gum-paa-pan | February |
เดือนมีนาคม | deuan mee-naa-kom | March |
เดือนเมษายน | deuan ma-sa-yon | April |
เดือนพฤษภาคม | deuan phreu-sa-phaa-kom | May |
In Thailand, as in many other cultures, there are specific traditions associated with each month, especially when it comes to festivals and holidays.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson on the days of the week and months in Thai. It's always beneficial to expand your vocabulary and cultural knowledge in a foreign language.
