Malayalam Grammar - How to Use "Have"

Hi Malayalam learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use "have" in Malayalam. "Have" is an important verb in English and it is used as an auxiliary verb to form different tenses such as present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect tenses. Similarly, in Malayalam, "have" is used as an auxiliary verb to form these tenses.

Present Perfect Tense

To form the present perfect tense in Malayalam, we use the verb "to have" as an auxiliary verb along with the past participle of the main verb.

For example,

Malayalam Pronunciation English
ഞാൻ കഴിച്ചു njān kaḻicc̣u I have eaten
നാം പുതിയ ചപ്പാതി തയ്യാറാക്കി അറിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു nām putiya cappāthi tayyārākki aṟiññirikkunnu We have prepared a new flatbread
അവൻ കാണിച്ചു avan kāṇicc̣u He has seen

Past Perfect Tense

To form the past perfect tense in Malayalam, we use the verb "to have" as an auxiliary verb along with the past participle of the main verb.

For example,

Malayalam Pronunciation English
ഞാൻ കഴിച്ചു നിർത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു njān kaḻicc̣u nirttiyirikkunnu I had eaten
നാം ഈ കളിക്ക് പറ്റിയിരിക്കുന്നു nām ī kaḷikk് paṟṟiyirikkunnu We had played this game
അവൻ കാണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു avan kāṇiccirikkunnu He had seen

Future Perfect Tense

To form the future perfect tense in Malayalam, we use the verb "to have" as an auxiliary verb along with the past participle of the main verb.

For example,

Malayalam Pronunciation English
ഞാൻ കഴിച്ചു പൂർത്തിയാക്കുന്നു njān kaḻicc̣u pūrttiyākkunnu I will have eaten
നാം താൻ വരുന്നതിൽ മുൻപും ഇരിക്കുന്നു nām tān varunnathil munpum irikkunnu We will have been waiting before you come
അവൻ പഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു avan paṭhiccirikkunnu He will have studied

Additional Notes

- In Malayalam, we don't use any auxiliary verb to construct the present continuous tense, instead, we use the present tense of the main verb. - To ask questions in Malayalam, we use the same word order as in English. For example, "Have you eaten?" is "നീ കഴിച്ചുമോ?" (nī kaḻiccumō?). - To use the negative form, we add "not" after the auxiliary verb "have". For example, "I have not eaten" is "ഞാൻ കഴിച്ചില്ല" (njān kaḻiccilla). - It is important to note that the word "have" cannot always be translated as "ഉണ്ടാക്കുക" (uṇṭākkuka) in Malayalam, as it depends on the context.

Practice Dialogue

  • Person 1: നീ ചായ കുടിക്കുന്നോ? (nī cāya kuṭikkunneō?) (Have you been drinking tea?)
  • Person 2: അല്ല, ഞാൻ ജൂസ് കുടിച്ചു. (alla, njān jūs kuṭicc̣u.) (No, I have been drinking juice.)
