Malayalam Grammar - How to Use "Have"

Present Perfect Tense

To form the present perfect tense in Malayalam, we use the verb "to have" as an auxiliary verb along with the past participle of the main verb.

Past Perfect Tense

To form the future perfect tense in Malayalam, we use the verb "to have" as an auxiliary verb along with the past participle of the main verb.

Additional Notes

- In Malayalam, we don't use any auxiliary verb to construct the present continuous tense, instead, we use the present tense of the main verb. - To ask questions in Malayalam, we use the same word order as in English. For example, "Have you eaten?" is "നീ കഴിച്ചുമോ?" (nī kaḻiccumō?). - To use the negative form, we add "not" after the auxiliary verb "have". For example, "I have not eaten" is "ഞാൻ കഴിച്ചില്ല" (njān kaḻiccilla). - It is important to note that the word "have" cannot always be translated as "ഉണ്ടാക്കുക" (uṇṭākkuka) in Malayalam, as it depends on the context.

Practice Dialogue

• Person 1: നീ ചായ കുടിക്കുന്നോ? (nī cāya kuṭikkunneō?) (Have you been drinking tea?)
• Person 2: അല്ല, ഞാൻ ജൂസ് കുടിച്ചു. (alla, njān jūs kuṭicc̣u.) (No, I have been drinking juice.)
