Georgian Grammar - Negation

Hi Georgian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in the Georgian language. Negation is an important part of any language, and it is essential to understand how to use it correctly in order to communicate effectively.

Negation is a way of expressing the opposite of something. In Georgian, there are two main ways to express negation: using the particle არ (ar) and using the particle არა (ara).

The particle არ (ar) is used to express a negative statement. For example, if you want to say "I don't speak Georgian", you would say "მე αƒ₯αƒαƒ αƒ—αƒ£αƒšαƒαƒ“ არ αƒ•αƒ˜αƒͺαƒ˜" (me qartulad ar viTci). The particle არა (ara) is used to express a negative question. For example, if you want to ask "Don't you speak Georgian?", you would say "αƒ—αƒ₯αƒ•αƒ”αƒœ არა αƒ₯αƒαƒ αƒ—αƒ£αƒšαƒαƒ“ αƒ˜αƒͺαƒ˜αƒ—?" (tkven ara qartulad iTcit?).

It is important to note that the particle არ (ar) is always followed by the verb in the infinitive form. For example, if you want to say "I don't understand", you would say "მე არ αƒ•αƒ˜αƒͺαƒ˜" (me ar viTci).

The particle არა (ara) is always followed by the verb in the conjugated form. For example, if you want to ask "Don't you understand?", you would say "αƒ—αƒ₯αƒ•αƒ”αƒœ არა αƒ˜αƒͺαƒ˜αƒ—?" (tkven ara iTcit?).

Here are some examples of negation in Georgian:

Georgian Pronunciation English Translation
მე არ αƒ•αƒ˜αƒͺαƒ˜ me ar viTci I don't understand
αƒ—αƒ₯αƒ•αƒ”αƒœ არა αƒ˜αƒͺαƒ˜αƒ—? tkven ara iTcit? Don't you understand?
მე არ αƒ•αƒ˜αƒ‘αƒ¬αƒαƒ•αƒšαƒ” me ar visTavale I don't learn
αƒ—αƒ₯αƒ•αƒ”αƒœ არა αƒ˜αƒ‘αƒ¬αƒαƒ•αƒšαƒ”αƒ—? tkven ara isTavlet? Don't you learn?
მე არ ვწერ me ar vcer I don't write
αƒ—αƒ₯αƒ•αƒ”αƒœ არა αƒ˜αƒ¬αƒ”αƒ αƒ—? tkven ara icert? Don't you write?

As you can see, the particle არ (ar) is used to express a negative statement, while the particle არა (ara) is used to express a negative question.

Now that you know how to use negation in Georgian, it's time to practice! Try making your own sentences using the particles არ (ar) and არა (ara). You can also practice with native speakers on the Polyglot Club website. Find native speakers and ask them any questions!
