Kannada Numbers
Kannada uses a base-10 number system, just like English. Here are the numbers from 1 to 20:
Kannada | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ಒಂದು | ondu | one |
ಎರಡು | eraḍu | two |
ಮೂರು | mūru | three |
ನಾಲ್ಕು | nālku | four |
ಐದು | aidu | five |
ಆರು | āru | six |
ಏಳು | ēḷu | seven |
ಎಂಟು | eMTu | eight |
ಒಂಬತ್ತು | oMbatthu | nine |
ಹತ್ತು | hatthu | ten |
ಹನ್ನೊಂದು | hannondhu | eleven |
ಹನ್ನೆರಡು | hanneḍu | twelve |
ಹದಿಮೂರು | hadimūru | thirteen |
ಹದಿನಾಲ್ಕು | hadinālku | fourteen |
ಹದಿನೈದು | hadinaidu | fifteen |
ಹದಿನೆಂಟು | hadineMTu | sixteen |
ಹದಿನೇಳು | hadinēḷu | seventeen |
ಹದಿನೆಂಟೆಂಟು | hadineMTenMTu | eighteen |
ಹತ್ತೊಂದು | hatt-ondu | nineteen |
ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು | ippatthu | twenty |
As you can see, the numbers 11-19 are formed by combining the words for 10 and the ones digit. For example, ಹತ್ತು (hattu) means 10, and ಹನ್ನೊಂದು (hannondhu) means 11 (literally "ten-one").
Here are the numbers from 21 to 100:
Kannada | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು | ippatthu | twenty |
ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ಒಂದು | ippatthu ondu | twenty-one |
ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ಎರಡು | ippatthu eraḍu | twenty-two |
... | ... | ... |
ನೂರು | nūru | one hundred |
To form numbers above 100, we use multiples of 100:
Kannada | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ನೂರು | nūru | one hundred |
ನೂರು ಒಂದು | nūru ondu | one hundred one |
ನೂರು ಎರಡು | nūru eraḍu | one hundred two |
..., ನೂರು ತೊಂಬತ್ತು | ..., nūru toMbatthu | ..., one hundred nineteen |
ಇರುನೂರು | irunūru | two hundred |
ಮೂವನೂರು | mūvanūru | three hundred |
ನಾಲ್ವರು ನೂರು | nālvaru nūru | four hundred |
ಐವನೂರು | aivanūru | five hundred |
ಆರುನೂರು | ārunūru | six hundred |
ಏಳುನೂರು | ēḷunūru | seven hundred |
ಎಂಟುನೂರು | eMTunūru | eight hundred |
ಒಂಬತ್ತನೂರು | oMbatthanūru | nine hundred |
To form numbers above 1000, we use multiples of 1000:
Kannada | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ಒಂದು ಸಾವಿರ | ondu sāvira | one thousand |
ಎರಡು ಸಾವಿರ | eraḍu sāvira | two thousand |
..., ಎರಡು ಸಾವಿರ ಒಂದು | ..., eraḍu sāvira ondu | ..., two thousand one |
ಮೂರು ಸಾವಿರ | mūru sāvira | three thousand |
ನಾಲ್ವರು ಸಾವಿರ | nālvaru sāvira | four thousand |
ಐವರು ಸಾವಿರ | aivaru sāvira | five thousand |
..., ಐವರು ಸಾವಿರ ಎರಡು | ..., aivaru sāvira eraḍu | ..., five thousand two |
ಹತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರ | hattu sāvira | ten thousand |
ಒಂಬತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರ | oMbatthu sāvira | fifteen thousand |
