What are Adverbs?[edit | edit source]

Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs to describe how, where, when, and how often an action takes place. In Kannada, adverbs typically end in "-ly" or "-yāgi." However, many Kannada adverbs do not follow this pattern and must be memorized separately.

Here are some common types of Kannada adverbs along with examples:

Time Adverbs[edit | edit source]

These adverbs describe when an action occurs or for how long.

Kannada Pronunciation English
ಇನ್ನು 'innu' Now
ಮೊದಲು 'modalu' Before
ಒಂದು ತಿಂಗಳು 'ondu timgalu' One month
ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ 'hosadagi' Newly

Manner Adverbs[edit | edit source]

These adverbs describe how an action takes place or the way in which it's done.

Kannada Pronunciation English
ಹೀಗೆ 'hige' Like this
ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ 'sariyagi' Properly
ತೂರ್ಪುಗೆ 'toorpuge' Slowly
ವೇಗವಾಗಿ 'vegavaagi' Rapidly

Frequency Adverbs[edit | edit source]

These adverbs describe how often an action takes place.

Kannada Pronunciation English
ಎಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲೂ 'ellellu' Everywhere
ಮುಂದೆಯೇ 'mundeye' Forward
ಹೆಚ್ಚುಕಡಿಮೆ 'hechukadime' At least / At most
ಕೆಲವು ಸಲ 'kelavu sala' Sometimes

By learning these common Kannada adverbs, you'll be able to express yourself with more subtlety and nuance.
