As a language teacher, I always encourage my students to learn adjectives to describe different places. In this lesson, we will focus on learning Kannada vocabulary to describe places based on their size, location, and weather. These words will be handy when traveling to different regions of Karnataka or conversing with locals in restaurants, shops, and hotels.

Adjectives for Describing Size[edit | edit source]

Here are some Kannada adjectives that can be used to describe the size of different places:

Kannada Pronunciation English
ಸಣ್ಣ saṇṇa small
ದೊಡ್ಡ doḍḍa big
ವಿಶಾಲ vishāla vast
ಅತಿವಿಶಾಲ ativishāla immense

Here are some examples of how you can use these words in sentences:

  • ನನ್ನ ಮನೆ ಸಣ್ಣದು. (Nanna mane saṇṇadu) - My house is small.
  • ಕೆರೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದು. (Kere doḍḍadu) - The lake is big.
  • ಹಳ್ಳಿಯು ವಿಶಾಲವಾಗಿದೆ. (Haḷḷiyu vishālavāgide) - The village is vast.
  • ನೀರಿನ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಅತಿವಿಶಾಲ ಮಳೆಯಿದೆ. (Nīrina suttalū ativishāla maḷeyide) - There is immense rain all around the water.

Adjectives for Describing Location[edit | edit source]

Here are some Kannada adjectives that can be used to describe the location of different places:

Kannada Pronunciation English
ಉತ್ತರ uttara north
ದಕ್ಷಿಣ dakṣiṇa south
ಪೂರ್ವ pūrva east
ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ paścima west

Here are some examples of how you can use these words in sentences:

  • ಗುಡ್ಡ ಉತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. (Guḍḍa uttaradalilu) - The hill is in the north.
  • ಮಳೆ ದಕ್ಷಿಣದ ಕಡೆಯಿಂದ ಬರುತ್ತಿದೆ. (Maḷe dakṣiṇada kaḍeyindabaruttide) - The rain is coming from the south.
  • ಭಾರತದ ಎರಡು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ನಗರಗಳು ಪೂರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿವೆ. (Bhāratada eraḍu pramukha nagaragaḷu pūrvadalilve) - Two major cities of India are in the east.
  • ಸೀನ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. (Sīna paścimadalilu) - China is in the west.

Adjectives for Describing Weather[edit | edit source]

Here are some Kannada adjectives that can be used to describe the weather of different places:

Kannada Pronunciation English
ಚಳಿಯಾಗಿದೆ caḷiyāgide cold
ಉಷ್ಣವಾಗಿದೆ uṣṇavāgide hot
ಮಳೆಗಾಲ maḷegāla rainy
ತುಂಬಾ ಉಷ್ಣವಾಗಿದೆ tumbā uṣṇavāgide extremely hot

Here are some examples of how you can use these words in sentences:

  • ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆದಿನ ಹವಾಮಾನ ಚಳಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. (Beḷagedina havāmāna caḷiyāgide) - The morning weather is cold.
  • ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ ಉಷ್ಣವಾಗಿದೆ. (Madyāhna uṣṇavāgide) - The weather is hot in the afternoon.
  • ಇಂದು ಮಳೆಗಾಲವಿದೆ. (Indu maḷegālavide) - It's rainy today.
  • ಈಗ ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಉಷ್ಣವಾಗಿದೆ. (Īga beḷagede tumbāuṣṇavāgide) - It is extremely hot now in the morning.
