== Introduction ==
=== Formation of the Past Simple Tense ===

To form the Past Simple tense in Central Pashto, we primarily use the verb root along with specific endings that indicate the subject pronoun. Below, we will explore how to conjugate regular and irregular verbs in the past tense.

==== Regular Verbs ====

Regular verbs in Central Pashto typically follow a predictable pattern for their past forms. The ending changes according to the subject pronoun. Below are the endings for different subject pronouns:

== Forming the Past Simple Tense ==

To form the past simple tense in Central Pashto, you need to understand the basic structure of the past tense. The past simple tense consists of a subject, a past tense verb, and an object (if there is one). For example:
* '''1st Person Plural (We)''':

* زه مينه ورشلم. (I washed my face.)
* '''2nd Person Plural (You all)''': -ئ
* ته کولو پخله خوري. (You ate a delicious meal.)
* هغه مرغ به زما کپره وورکول. (That chicken flew over my head.)

In Central Pashto, verbs are either regular or irregular. Regular verbs add "-ېد" (-eid) to the stem of the verb, while irregular verbs may have a different conjugation in the past tense.
* '''3rd Person Plural (They)''': -ې

Here is an example of a regular verb in the past simple tense:
Let's look at an example of a regular verb conjugated in the past tense:

! Central Pashto !! Pronunciation !! English
|-
|-
| زه کتاب وخونم. || Zə ktab uxʊnam. || I read a book.

| '''کتل''' || katal || to see

|-
|-
| ته راټله کړې. || Tə rāţəla kəre. || You rode a bicycle.

| '''ما کتل''' || ma katal || I saw

|-
|-
| هغه سپین ورکشت. || Hağa spīn wərkaşt. || She cooked spinach.

| '''ته کتل''' || ta katal || You saw

|-

| '''هغه کتل''' || haga katal || He/She saw

|-

| '''موږ کتل''' || mung katal || We saw

|-

| '''تاسې کتل''' || tasay katal || You all saw

|-

| '''هغوی کتل''' || haghwi katal || They saw

|}
|}

In this example, the verb stem is "وخون" (uxʊn), "کړ" (kər), and "ورکشت" (wərkaşt). To add the past tense ending, "-ېد"(-eid), you simply add it to the end of the verb stem. The final conjugated verbs are "وخونېد" (uxʊneid), "کړېد" (kəreid), and "ورکشتېد" (wərkaşteid).
As you can see, the verb "کتل" (to see) changes according to the subject pronoun, following the pattern outlined above.

Irregular verbs, on the other hand, have a different conjugation in the past tense. Here are some examples:
==== Irregular Verbs ====

Irregular verbs, on the other hand, do not follow a fixed pattern and must be memorized. Here are some common irregular verbs in Central Pashto along with their past forms:

| '''زه تللی یم''' || za talali yam || I went

|-
|-
| هغه بدمست شو. || Hağa badmǝst śo. || He became angry.
|}

In these examples, the past tense of the verbs "لګولېد" (lağweleid), "ستول" (stol), and "شي شوېد" (şi şoeid) are irregular. You will need to memorize their conjugation in the past tense.
| '''ته تللی یی''' || ta talali ye || You went

== Negation in the Past Simple Tense ==
|-

To form a negative sentence in the past simple tense, you need to add the negative prefix "نا-" (nā-) in front of the past tense verb. For example:
| '''هغه تللی دی''' || haga talali di || He/She went

* زه ناوخوندې. (I did not read.)
|-
* ته ناستول. (You did not stand up.)
* هغه ناخوشه ورسات. (She did not drink tea.)

You can also use the negative particle "نه" (na) to form a negative sentence in the past tense. For example:
| '''موږ تللي یو''' || mung talali yu || We went

* زه کتاب وخونم نه کړم. (I did not read a book.)
|-
* ته راټله نه کړې. (You did not ride a bicycle.)
* هغه سپین نه ورکشت. (She did not cook spinach.)

== Questions in the Past Simple Tense ==
| '''تاسې تللي یاست''' || tasay talali yast || You all went

To form a yes/no question in the past simple tense, you need to change the word order of the subject and verb, and add the question particle "هل" (hal) at the beginning of the sentence. For example:
|-

* هل زه کتاب وخوني؟ (Did I read a book?)
| '''هغوی تللي دي''' || haghwi talali di || They went
* هل ته راټله خوندي؟ (Did you ride a bicycle?)
* هل هغه سپین ورکړ؟ (Did she cook spinach?)

To form a wh-question in the past simple tense, you need to change the word order and use the appropriate question word (who, what, when, where, why, how). For example:
|}

It is essential to practice these irregular forms, as they are frequently used in everyday conversation.

=== Usage of the Past Simple Tense ===

* د څو موضوع يې څخه نويد کوم، هله د کاپور خوراک پخله کړ؟ (What did you buy, did you eat the soup?)
The Past Simple tense is used to describe actions that were completed in the past. Here are some common scenarios where you might use it:

By the end of this lesson, you will have a solid grasp of how to use the Past Simple tense in Central Pashto and feel more confident in your ability to communicate past events effectively.

Formation of the Past Simple Tense[edit | edit source]

To form the Past Simple tense in Central Pashto, we primarily use the verb root along with specific endings that indicate the subject pronoun. Below, we will explore how to conjugate regular and irregular verbs in the past tense.

Regular Verbs[edit | edit source]

Regular verbs in Central Pashto typically follow a predictable pattern for their past forms. The ending changes according to the subject pronoun. Below are the endings for different subject pronouns:

  • 1st Person Singular (I): -م / -مې
  • 2nd Person Singular (You): -ې / -ی
  • 3rd Person Singular (He/She/It): -ه / -ی
  • 1st Person Plural (We): -و
  • 2nd Person Plural (You all): -ئ
  • 3rd Person Plural (They): -ې

Let's look at an example of a regular verb conjugated in the past tense:

Central Pashto Pronunciation English
کتل katal to see
ما کتل ma katal I saw
ته کتل ta katal You saw
هغه کتل haga katal He/She saw
موږ کتل mung katal We saw
تاسې کتل tasay katal You all saw
هغوی کتل haghwi katal They saw

As you can see, the verb "کتل" (to see) changes according to the subject pronoun, following the pattern outlined above.

Irregular Verbs[edit | edit source]

Irregular verbs, on the other hand, do not follow a fixed pattern and must be memorized. Here are some common irregular verbs in Central Pashto along with their past forms:

Central Pashto Pronunciation English
تلل talal to go
زه تللی یم za talali yam I went
ته تللی یی ta talali ye You went
هغه تللی دی haga talali di He/She went
موږ تللي یو mung talali yu We went
تاسې تللي یاست tasay talali yast You all went
هغوی تللي دي haghwi talali di They went

It is essential to practice these irregular forms, as they are frequently used in everyday conversation.

Usage of the Past Simple Tense[edit | edit source]

The Past Simple tense is used to describe actions that were completed in the past. Here are some common scenarios where you might use it:

  • Describing events that happened at a specific time in the past
  • Telling a story or recounting experiences
  • Discussing past habits or repeated actions
