Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn how to form questions in Sindhi. Asking questions is essential in any language, especially when you are trying to communicate with others. You will learn how to form both yes/no and information questions, as well as the appropriate ways to use them in conversations.

Yes/No Questions

Yes/no questions are questions that can be answered with a simple "yes" or "no" response. In Sindhi, yes/no questions can be formed by adding the question particle "جي" at the end of a statement.

For example:

Sindhi Pronunciation English
تون اهڻي آهيو? جي. Toon ahni aaheyo? Ji. Are you coming? Yes.
تو آگهي ڏي؟ جي. To agaheyo de? Ji. Did you give the information? Yes.
اوهان منهنجي کتاب ڇپيوندسان؟ جي. Ohan munhje kitaab chapiyundesan? Ji. Did they copy my book? Yes.
موھنجي ڦڻ کٽو ؟ نه. Mohanji phann kutto? Na. Is my dog dead? No.

As you can see from the examples above, the word "جي" can be used to form a yes/no question. It is placed at the end of the statement and indicates that the speaker is seeking a confirmation or negation from the listener.

Information Questions

Information questions are questions that seek specific details or information from the listener. In Sindhi, these types of questions can be formed in a variety of ways based on the question word used.

Question Words

The following table shows the most common question words used in Sindhi:

Sindhi Pronunciation English
ڪين Keen Who
ڪيا Kia What
ڪئين Kuheen Where
چڪر Chakar Why
ڪئي Kuee How
ڀيو Bhayo When

Construction of Information Questions

Now that you are familiar with the question words, you can use them to ask for specific information. In Sindhi, questions can be formed by placing the question word at the beginning of the sentence.

For example:

Sindhi Pronunciation English
ڪيا سسل ٿيندي آهي؟ Kia Sassal theendee aaheyo? What is Sassal doing?
ڪيڏهن کان ٺيندا آهي؟ Kiddhan khan theenda aaheyo? From where are you coming?
ڀيو شام ڀريو جو؟ Bhayo shaam bheryo jo? When did you arrive?
ڪئي ڳڻي payo؟ Kuee ghanni paayo? How much did it cost?

As you can see from the examples above, information questions in Sindhi are formed by placing the question word at the beginning of the sentence, followed by the verb and the subject.

Negation in Questions

In Sindhi, negation in questions is done by adding the negation word "نه" at the end of the sentence. The word "نه" means "no" and is used to express a negative answer to a question.

For example:

Sindhi Pronunciation English
تون پارچائي ورتي شاي؟ نه. Toon parchhaee warti shay? Na. Do you eat breakfast? No.
تون توري جاهڙي وساري شاي؟ نه. Toon turi jahri wasaari shay? Na. Do you like fish? No.
تون برڻ سوئي شتو؟ نه. Toon barn suoee shato? Na. Did you sleep well? No.
