UkrainianGrammar → Verbs - Present Tense

As a Ukrainian language teacher with 20 years of experience, I know that mastering the basics of verbs is essential to communicating effectively in Ukrainian. In this lesson, we will cover the present tense of verbs, both regular and irregular.

Consider broadening your understanding by checking out these related lessons: Adverbs of quality, quantity and manner & Gender.

Regular Verbs

Regular verbs are those that follow a set pattern in the present tense. To form the present tense of regular verbs, simply remove the -ти ending and replace it with the appropriate ending according to the subject of the sentence.

For example, let's take the verb "говорити" (to speak):

Ukrainian Pronunciation English
говорити hovoryty to speak

In the present tense, it would be conjugated as follows:

Subject Ukrainian English
I говорю I speak
You (singular) говориш You speak
He/she/it говорить he/she/it speaks
We говоримо we speak
You (plural) говорите you all speak
They говорять they speak

Notice that we simply removed the -ти ending and replaced it with -ю, -иш, -ить, -имо, -ите, and -ять respectively.

Some other examples of regular verbs in Ukrainian include:

Ukrainian Pronunciation English
вчити vchyty to learn
працювати pratsyuvaty to work
чекати chekaty to wait

To conjugate these verbs in the present tense, follow the same pattern as with говорити:

Subject вчити працювати чекати
I вчу працюю чекаю
You (singular) вчиш працюєш чекаєш
He/she/it вчить працює чекає
We вчимо працюємо чекаємо
You (plural) вчите працюєте чекаєте
They вчать працюють чекають

As you may have noticed, the endings are the same as they were for говорити. This is because all regular verbs in the present tense follow this pattern.

Irregular Verbs

Irregular verbs are those that do not follow the regular pattern in the present tense. Instead, they have their own unique conjugations that must be memorized.

Here are some examples of irregular verbs in Ukrainian:

Ukrainian Pronunciation English
бути buty to be
мати maty to have
робити robyty to do

To conjugate these verbs, you must memorize their unique forms. Here they are in the present tense:

Subject бути мати робити
I є маю роблю
You (singular) єш маєш робиш
He/she/it є має робить
We ємо маємо робимо
You (plural) єте маєте робите
They є мають роблять

As you can see, these verbs have their own unique forms that do not follow the regular pattern. The best way to memorize them is through practice and repetition.

Tips for Learning Ukrainian Verbs

Learning Ukrainian verbs can be challenging, but with the right approach, it can also be fun and rewarding. Here are some tips to help you master verbs in Ukrainian:

  • Practice every day: Like any skill, mastering verbs takes practice. Aim to practice a little bit every day, whether it's through exercises, reading, or conversation.
  • Use flashcards: Flashcards can be a great way to memorize irregular verb forms. Write the verb in Ukrainian on one side of the card, and the present tense conjugation on the other side. Quiz yourself regularly to reinforce your memory.
  • Watch Ukrainian movies and TV shows: Listening to native speakers is one of the best ways to pick up on verbs and other grammatical structures. Watching Ukrainian movies and TV shows can help you hear verbs in context and improve your listening comprehension.
  • Speak with a tutor: A language tutor can be a great resource when learning verbs. A tutor can help you practice verbs in context and provide feedback on your pronunciation and grammar.
  • Have fun with it: Learning Ukrainian verbs can be challenging, but it can also be fun. Find ways to make it enjoyable, whether it's through making up silly sentences or practicing with friends.

Conclusion

Learning verbs is an essential part of mastering the Ukrainian language. In this lesson, we covered the present tense of both regular and irregular verbs. Remember to practice every day, and use resources like flashcards and native speakers to help reinforce your learning. With time and dedication, you'll be conjugating verbs like a pro in no time!
