== Basic Question Formation ==

The basic structure for forming questions in Hindi is quite simple. All you need to do is add the word क्या (kya) at the beginning of the sentence. For example:

== Basic Question Words ==
To form questions in Hindi, we use question words like क्या (kyaa), कौन (kaun), कहाँ (kahaan), कैसे (kaise), किस तरह (kis tarah), कब (kab), कितना (kitna), कौन सा (kaun saa), कौन से (kaun se). These question words can be used to ask questions related to persons, actions, things, places, time, quantity, quality, and manner.

* आप क्या कर रहे हैं? (Aap kya kar rahe hain?) - What are you doing?
Here are a few examples:
* आप क्या खा रहे हैं? (Aap kya kha rahe hain?) - What are you eating?

You can also use the word क्यों (kyon) to form questions. This is used when asking why something happened or why someone did something. For example:

* आप क्यों गए? (Aap kyon gaye?) - Why did you go?
== Making Questions with Verbs ==
* आप क्यों नहीं आये? (Aap kyon nahi aaye?) - Why didn't you come?
In Hindi, we can make a basic question by adding the helper verb क्या (kyaa) before the main verb. This type of question is called क्या सवाल (kyaa savaal).

=== Yes/No Questions ===
We can also make questions by adding a question word at the beginning of a sentence, and then follow it with the subject and the verb. For example:

Yes/no questions are formed by adding the word क्या (kya) at the beginning of the sentence. For example:
* तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो? (tum kahaan jaa rahe ho?) means where are you going?
* मैं कैसे करूँ? (main kaise karoon?) means how should I do it?

* आप क्या जानते हैं? (Aap kya jaante hain?) - Do you know?
Here are a few more examples:
* आप क्या सो रहे हैं? (Aap kya so rahe hain?) - Are you sleeping?

=== Wh-Questions ===

|-
| क्या उसने कुछ बताया? || kyaa usne kuch bataaya? || Did he tell anything?
|-
| क्या तुम्हें भूख लगी है? || kyaa tumhen bhookh lagi hai? || Are you hungry?

Wh-questions are formed by using the appropriate wh-word at the beginning of the sentence. The most common wh-words are कौन (kaun), क्या (kya), कहाँ (kahaan), कब (kab), कैसे (kaise), क्यों (kyon). For example:
== Types of Questions ==
In Hindi, questions can be classified into five types.

* आप कौन हैं? (Aap kaun hain?) - Who are you?
=== 1. जाति (Jati) Questions ===
* आप कहाँ रह रहे हैं? (Aap kahaan rah rahe hain?) - Where are you living?
जाति (jati) questions are those that require a 'yes' or 'no' answer. In Hindi, we can add the word 'क्या' (kyaa) at the beginning of a statement to convert it into a jati question. For example:
* आप कब आएंगे? (Aap kab aayenge?) - When will you come?
* आप कैसे कर रहे हैं? (Aap kaise kar rahe hain?) - How are you doing?
* आप क्यों आये हैं? (Aap kyon aaye hain?) - Why have you come?

== Advanced Topics ==
* तुम घर जाते हो। (tum ghar jaate ho.) means you go home.
* क्या तुम घर जाते हो? (kyaa tum ghar jaate ho?) means do you go home?

In addition to the basic question formation, there are some more advanced topics that you should be aware of.
=== 2. कार्य (Kary) Questions ===
कार्य (kary) questions are those that require a question word like कैसे (kaise), क्यों (kyon), कब (kab), etc. For example:

=== Negation ===
* तुम कैसे खुश रहते हो? (tum kaise khush rahte ho?) means how do you stay happy?
* उसने कब खाना खाया? (usne kab khaana khaaya?) means when did he eat?

Negation is used to form questions that expect a negative answer. To form a negation question, you need to add the word नहीं (nahin) after the wh-word. For example:
=== 3. विस्तार (Vistaar) Questions ===
विस्तार (vistaar) questions are those that require a detailed response. These questions usually start with 'कैसे' (kaise) or 'कौन सा' (kaun saa) and are often used to ask about a specific event or situation. For example:

* आप कौन नहीं हैं? (Aap kaun nahin hain?) - Who are not you?
* तुम कैसे फिट रहते हो? (tum kaise fit rahte ho?) means how do you stay fit?
* आप कहाँ नहीं रह रहे हैं? (Aap kahaan nahin rah rahe hain?) - Where are you not living?
* कौन से फल खाने चाहिए? (kaun se phal khaane chaahiye?) means which fruits should we eat?
* आप कैसे नहीं कर रहे हैं? (Aap kaise nahin kar rahe hain?) - How are you not doing?

=== Tag Questions ===
=== 4. स्‍वयंभू (Svaym-bho) Questions ===
स्‍वयंभू (svaym-bho) questions are those that answer their own questions. For example:

Tag questions are used to confirm information or to ask for confirmation. To form a tag question, you need to add the word क्या (kya) at the end of the sentence. For example:
* हम सभी इंसान हैं, न? (hum sabhee insaan hain, na?) means we are all human, right?

* आप गायब हैं क्या? (Aap gaayab hain kya?) - You are missing, right?
=== 5. संयुक्त (Sanyukt) Questions ===
* आप अच्छे हैं क्या? (Aap ache hain kya?) - You are fine, right?
संयुक्त (sanyukt) questions are those that join multiple questions together using the conjunction "और" (aur). For example:

=== Alternative Questions ===
* तुम्हारा नाम क्या है? तुम कहाँ रहते हो? (tumhaara naam kyaa hai? tum kahaan rahte ho?) means what is your name? Where do you live? can be rephrased as तुम्हारा नाम क्या है और तुम कहाँ रहते हो? (tumhaara naam kyaa hai aur tum kahaan rahte ho?)

Alternative questions are used to ask for a choice between two or more options. To form an alternative question, you need to add the words या (ya) or या फिर (ya phir) between the options. For example:

After mastering this lesson, these related pages might interest you: Imperative Mood, Conditional Mood, Adverbs of Manner & Question Words.

Basic Question Words[edit | edit source]

To form questions in Hindi, we use question words like क्या (kyaa), कौन (kaun), कहाँ (kahaan), कैसे (kaise), किस तरह (kis tarah), कब (kab), कितना (kitna), कौन सा (kaun saa), कौन से (kaun se). These question words can be used to ask questions related to persons, actions, things, places, time, quantity, quality, and manner.

Here are a few examples:

Hindi Pronunciation English
क्या? kyaa? what?
कौन? kaun? who?
कहाँ? kahaan? where?
कैसे? kaise? how?
किस तरह? kis tarah? how?
कब? kab? when?
कितना? kitna? how much?
कौन सा? kaun saa? which?
कौन से? kaun se? which?

Making Questions with Verbs[edit | edit source]

In Hindi, we can make a basic question by adding the helper verb क्या (kyaa) before the main verb. This type of question is called क्या सवाल (kyaa savaal).

We can also make questions by adding a question word at the beginning of a sentence, and then follow it with the subject and the verb. For example:

  • तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो? (tum kahaan jaa rahe ho?) means where are you going?
  • मैं कैसे करूँ? (main kaise karoon?) means how should I do it?

Here are a few more examples:

Hindi Pronunciation English
क्या तुम खाओगे? kyaa tum khaaoge? Will you eat?
क्या उसने कुछ बताया? kyaa usne kuch bataaya? Did he tell anything?
क्या तुम्हें भूख लगी है? kyaa tumhen bhookh lagi hai? Are you hungry?

Types of Questions[edit | edit source]

In Hindi, questions can be classified into five types.

1. जाति (Jati) Questions[edit | edit source]

जाति (jati) questions are those that require a 'yes' or 'no' answer. In Hindi, we can add the word 'क्या' (kyaa) at the beginning of a statement to convert it into a jati question. For example:

  • तुम घर जाते हो। (tum ghar jaate ho.) means you go home.
  • क्या तुम घर जाते हो? (kyaa tum ghar jaate ho?) means do you go home?

2. कार्य (Kary) Questions[edit | edit source]

  • तुम कैसे खुश रहते हो? (tum kaise khush rahte ho?) means how do you stay happy?
  • उसने कब खाना खाया? (usne kab khaana khaaya?) means when did he eat?

3. विस्तार (Vistaar) Questions[edit | edit source]

विस्तार (vistaar) questions are those that require a detailed response. These questions usually start with 'कैसे' (kaise) or 'कौन सा' (kaun saa) and are often used to ask about a specific event or situation. For example:

  • तुम कैसे फिट रहते हो? (tum kaise fit rahte ho?) means how do you stay fit?
  • कौन से फल खाने चाहिए? (kaun se phal khaane chaahiye?) means which fruits should we eat?

4. स्‍वयंभू (Svaym-bho) Questions[edit | edit source]

स्‍वयंभू (svaym-bho) questions are those that answer their own questions. For example:

  • हम सभी इंसान हैं, न? (hum sabhee insaan hain, na?) means we are all human, right?

5. संयुक्त (Sanyukt) Questions[edit | edit source]

Dialogue[edit | edit source]
