Malayalam Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Malayalam learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Malayalam. The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an uncertain outcome. It is also used to express a wish or a desire. In this lesson, we will learn how to form sentences in the conditional mood and when to use them.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is formed by using the verb ചെയ്യുന്നത് (ceyyunnathu) which means "to do". This verb is conjugated according to the subject of the sentence. For example, if the subject is "I", then the verb would be conjugated as ഞാന്‍ ചെയ്യും (njan ceyyum).

Formation[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is formed by adding the suffix ഉം (um) to the verb. For example, if the verb is കഴിയും (kazhiyum), then the conditional form would be കഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ (kazhiyumpol).

Usage[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an uncertain outcome. It is also used to express a wish or a desire. For example:

  • ഞാന്‍ ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ അത് കഴിയും (njan ceyyumpol at kazhiyum) - If I could do it, I would do it.
  • ഞാന്‍ ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ അത് കഴിയില്ല (njan ceyyumpol at kazhiyilla) - If I could not do it, I wouldn't do it.

The conditional mood can also be used to express a wish or a desire. For example:

  • ഞാന്‍ ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ അത് കഴിയിരിക്കണം (njan ceyyumpol at kazhiyirikkannam) - I wish I could do it.
  • ഞാന്‍ ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ അത് കഴിയിരിക്കണം എന്ന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു (njan ceyyumpol at kazhiyirikkannam ennu agrahikkunnu) - I am hoping that I can do it.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

In this lesson, we have learned about the conditional mood in Malayalam. We have seen how to form sentences in the conditional mood and when to use them. We hope that you have a better understanding of the conditional mood now.
