In this lesson, you will learn about ordinal numbers in Nepali. Ordinal numbers indicate the position or order of elements in a list, sequence, or series.
Ordinal Numbers in Nepali
Ordinal numbers in Nepali are formed by adding the suffix "-ो" ("-o") to the end of the cardinal number. For example:
Nepali (individual language) | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
फेरि (1st) | "pheri" | first |
दुईवटा (2nd) | "dui baṭā" | second |
तीनो (3rd) | "tīno" | third |
चारो (4th) | "cāro" | fourth |
पाँचो (5th) | "pām̐co" | fifth |
Some exceptions to this rule include:
- पहिलो (pahilo) for "first" instead of "pheri". - दोस्रो (dosro) for "second" instead of "dui baṭā". - तेश्रो (tesro) for "third" instead of "tīno".
Note: "o" in the suffix "-ो" ("-o") should be pronounced with the nasal sound "ṃ" ("ŋ" in IPA) when followed by a consonant.
Examples
- The first day of the week is Sunday. = सप्ताहको पहिलो दिन आइतवार हो। (saptāhako pahilo din āitavār ho.) - This is my second visit to Nepal. = यो मेरो दोस्रो नेपाल भ्रमण हो। (yo mero dosro Nepāla bhramaṇa ho.) - She came in third in the race. = उनी दौडमा तेश्रो आएकी थिइन्। (unī ḍōḍamā teśro āekī thīin.)
Notes
- Ordinal numbers are commonly used in daily life, especially when referring to rankings or positions. - There may be slight variations in the suffix "-ो" ("-o") depending on the gender or number of the noun it modifies.
I hope you found this lesson helpful in enhancing your Nepali language skills. In the next lesson, you will learn about plural and fractional numbers in Nepali.
