Tamil Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Tamil learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Tamil. We will look at the different forms of the verb and how to use them in sentences. We will also look at some examples of sentences using the verb "be".

The verb "be" is used to express existence, identity, or a state of being. In Tamil, the verb "be" is conjugated differently depending on the subject of the sentence. The verb "be" can be conjugated in the present, past, and future tenses.

The present tense of the verb "be" is இருக்கிறது (iru-ki-ru-thu). This form is used when the subject of the sentence is singular. For example:

  • என் பெயர் ராமன் இருக்கிறது (en peyar Raaman iru-ki-ru-thu) - My name is Raaman.

The past tense of the verb "be" is இருந்தது (iru-n-tha-thu). This form is used when the subject of the sentence is singular. For example:

  • அவன் என் தந்தை இருந்தது (avan en thandhai iru-n-tha-thu) - He was my father.

The future tense of the verb "be" is இருக்கும் (iru-k-kum). This form is used when the subject of the sentence is singular. For example:

  • அவள் என் சகோதரன் இருக்கும் (aval en sakotharan iru-k-kum) - She will be my teacher.

The verb "be" can also be used in the negative form. The negative form of the verb "be" is இல்லை (illai). This form is used when the subject of the sentence is singular. For example:

  • அவன் என் தந்தை இல்லை (avan en thandhai illai) - He is not my father.

Here is a dialogue using the verb "be" in Tamil:

  • Person 1: என் பெயர் ராமன் இருக்கிறது (en peyar Raaman iru-ki-ru-thu) - My name is Raaman.
  • Person 2: என் பெயர் சித்ரா இருக்கிறது (en peyar Chithra iru-ki-ru-thu) - My name is Chithra.
