In today's lesson, we will talk about different parts of the body in French.

Most common words for body parts:
- le corps = the body
- les cheveux = hair
- une mèche de cheveux = a lock of hair
- les poils = hairs (beware!)
- la tête = the head
- le visage = the face
- l'oreille = the ear
- le cou = the neck
- la nuque = the nape
- l'œil = the eye
- les yeux = the eyes
- le nez = the nose
- la joue = the cheek
- la bouche = mouth
- la lèvre = the lip
- la dent = the tooth
- la poitrine = the chest
- le ventre = the belly / stomach (formal)
- l'estomac = the stomach (organ)
- le dos = the back
- la jambe = the leg
- le genou = the knee
- la cheville = the ankle
- le pied = the foot
- l'orteil = the toe
- le bras = arm
- l'épaule = the shoulder
- le coude = the elbow

- Il prend soin de son corps. = He takes care of his body.
- J’ai mal à la tête. = I have a headache. / My head hurts.
- Elle a les cheveux roux et longs. = She has long red hair.
- Vous avez un joli visage. = You have a pretty face.
- Il a les lèvres enflées. = His lips are swollen.
- Elle a les joues rouges. = She has rosy cheeks.
- J’ai mal au cou. = My neck hurts.
Common idioms / Expressions courantes[edit | edit source]
La tête = The head[edit | edit source]
- Il ne sait plus où donner de la tête = He is overwhelmed
- Il n'en fait qu'à sa tête = He does whatever he wants
- Se creuser la tête = To think a lot
- Il est parti sur un coup de tête = He went on a whim
- Elle a la tête dans les étoiles = She is dreamy
- C'est un prix à la tête du client = This is a different price according to customers
Les cheveux = The hair[edit | edit source]
- Couper les cheveux en quatre. = To be fussy.
- Il a échoué à son examen d'un cheveu = He narrowly failed in his examination
Les yeux = The eyes[edit | edit source]
- Faire les yeux doux = To make eyes
- Se mettre le doigt dans l'œil = To be barking up the wrong tree
- Faire quelque chose en un clin d'œil = To do something very quickly
- Obtenir quelque chose à l'œil = To get something for free
Les oreilles = Ears[edit | edit source]
Les murs ont des oreilles = The walls have ears
Dormir sur ses deux oreilles = To sleep like a log
Tirer les oreilles de quelqu'un = To cold someone

- Avoir un coup dans le nez = To be drunk
- Avoir quelqu'un dans le nez = To feel animosity against somebody
- A vue de nez = At a rough guess
- Tirer les vers du nez = To worm something out of someone

- Faire la bouche en cœur = To pucker
- Mettre l'eau à la bouche = To make (one's) mouth water
