Basic Sentence in Wolof[edit | edit source]

To make a simple sentence in Wolof, you need a subject, a verb, and an object. The basic structure is:

Wolof Pronunciation English
nopp nohp I
seen sen am/is/are
jëkk jekk eating
buy jàmm buy jahm rice
ndox ndokh with
suuf soof juice

In English, this would translate to "I am eating rice with juice."

Giving Your Opinion[edit | edit source]

When giving your opinion in Wolof, you can use the following phrases:

Wolof Pronunciation English
ma la nekk mah lah nek in my opinion
di defar na nekk dee deh-fahr nah nek I like
am solo naa ahm soh-loh nah I dislike
dina la nekk dee-nah lah nek I think
nañu gëstu nah-nyu gehs-too we prefer

Example dialogue:

  • Khady: Ma la nekk ñaari jàmm ba beneen? (In my opinion, is fish better than rice?)
  • Fatou: Dina la nekk ñaari jàmm ba beneen. (I think fish is better than rice.)

Now let's use these phrases in sentences:

Wolof Pronunciation English
Ma la nekk defar sapp bi. mah lah nek deh-fahr sahp bee In my opinion, the soap smells good.
Di defar na nekk ñaari yapp. dee deh-fahr nah nek nyah-ree yahp I like grilled fish.
Am solo naa dafa djarit ngir nekk. ahm soh-loh nah dah-fah jah-reet ngir nek I dislike spicy food.
Dina la nekk doomu Africa mom. dee-nah lah nek doh-moo Africa mohm I think Africa is beautiful.
Nañu gëstu daan la. nah-nyu gehs-too dahn lah We prefer tea.

Remember, these phrases are just opinions and might differ from person to person.
