Western Frisian Vocabulary - Colors

Hi Western Frisian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn the vocabulary for colors in Western Frisian. Colors are an essential part of daily life as they help us describe and understand the world around us. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and name different colors in Western Frisian.

Starting with the colors we usually see around us, here are some basic colors that we commonly use:

Colors have different shades and intensities. Let's look at some words that describe different shades of the colors we've already learned:

Some colors are created by mixing other colors, as seen below:

Color Idioms and Expressions[edit | edit source]

There are also many idioms and expressions that use colors in Western Frisian, just like in other languages. Here are some examples:

Fet roan as in poppebern To be extremely angry To be red as a chili pepper
Gieljen yn 'e beurs To have a lot of money To be yellow in the wallet
Groen is it libben To be energetic or healthy Green is life
In read izeren kweade Someone with a bad temper A red iron evil

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Here's an example dialogue between two people discussing colors:

  • Person 1: Wat is dyn favorite kleur? (What is your favorite color?)
  • Person 2: Myn favorite kleur is blau. (My favorite color is blue.)
  • Person 1: Dat is leuk! (That's nice!) Ik hâld mear fan grien, want it makket myn eachen bliid. (I prefer green because it makes my eyes happy.)
  • Person 2: Ja, dat kin ik ûnderskriuwe. In moaie griene wan is prachtich! (Yes, I can agree with that. A beautiful green wall is gorgeous!)
