Family in Welsh[edit | edit source]

The Welsh word for family is "teulu". It is important to note that there are different words for family members in Welsh depending on the speaker's relationship to them. For example, the word for "father" changes depending on whether you are a girl or a boy, and whether you are talking about your own father or someone else's father.

Here are the most common family members in Welsh:

Welsh Pronunciation English
teulu tuh-lee family
tad tAd father (someone else's father)
dad dahd father (your own father)
mam mAm mother
chwaer chwEyeR sister
brawd bRaoD brother
hen chwaer hen chwEyeR older sister
brawd hynaf bRaoD hu-naf oldest brother
bachgen bAch-gen boy
merch meRch girl
tad-cu tad-kee grandfather
mam-gu mam-gi grandmother

Example Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Let's see how these terms can be used in context:

  • Person 1: Dyma fy mam-gu. (Here is my grandmother.)
  • Person 2: Helô, mam-gu! Sut wyt ti heddiw? (Hello, grandma! How are you today?)
  • Person 1: Dw i'n iawn diolch. Ydy hwnna dy frawd? (I'm fine, thank you. Is that your brother?)
  • Person 2: Na, hwnna yw fy mrawd i. (No, that's my brother.)

Interesting Fact[edit | edit source]

In Welsh culture, there is a tradition called "noson lawen" which translates to "happy night". This is a get-together where people come together to sing, dance, and enjoy themselves. It can be with family, friends or the broader community. Many Welsh songs focus on love, nature, and the everyday life of the people, often in the Welsh language with famous Welsh hymns such as "Calon Lân" (A Pure Heart) or "Cwm Rhondda".

Practice Exercise[edit | edit source]

Now that you know the Welsh words for family members, try to complete the following dialogue:

  • Person 1: Dyma fy nhad. (Here is my father.)
  • Person 2: Helô, nghyfaill. Dw i'n meddwl bod ti'n gwylio dy _______. (Hello, friend. I think you are looking for your _______.)
