What is the Future Tense?[edit | edit source]

In Urdu, the future tense is used to indicate an action or event that will happen at some future time. For example, "I will eat breakfast tomorrow" or "She will go to the market next week". The future tense is used to express certainty or high probability that an event will occur in the future.

In Urdu, the future tense is relatively easy to form. We just need to add the appropriate suffix to the present tense verb. The most commonly used suffix for the future tense is "گا" (ga) or "گی" (gi).

Here are some examples:

Urdu Pronunciation English
"میں کل ناشتہ کھاؤں گا۔" "Main kal nashta khaoon ga." "I will eat breakfast tomorrow."
"وہ اگلے ہفتے بازار جائیں گی۔" "Woh agle hafte bazaar jayengi." "She will go to the market next week."

As you can see, we simply added the suffix "گا" (ga) to the verb "کھانا" (khana) and the suffix "گی" (gi) to the verb "جانا" (jana) to form the future tense.

Note: The future tense can also be formed using other suffixes such as "ہوں گے" (honge), "ہوگی" (hogi), and "چکا ہوں گا" (chuka hoon ga). However, these suffixes are not as commonly used as "گا" (ga) and "گی" (gi).

Future Tense with Helping Verbs[edit | edit source]

In addition to the suffixes discussed above, the future tense can also be formed using helping verbs. The most commonly used helping verbs for the future tense are "ہونا" (hona) and "جانا" (jana). The helping verb "ہونا" (hona) is used with masculine subjects, while "جانا" (jana) is used with feminine subjects.

Here are some examples:

Urdu Pronunciation English
"میں کل ناشتہ کھانے جا رہا ہوں۔" "Main kal nashta khane ja raha hoon." "I am going to eat breakfast tomorrow."
"وہ اگلے ہفتے بازار جانے جا رہی ہے۔" "Woh agle hafte bazaar jane ja rahi hai." "She is going to the market next week."

Note: In Urdu grammar, the future tense with helping verbs is also referred to as "مستقبل موجودہ" (Mastaqbil Maujuda).

Future Tense with Infinitive Verbs[edit | edit source]

Another way to express the future tense in Urdu is by using an infinitive verb followed by the appropriate conjugation of the verb "ہونا" (hona). The infinitive verb is formed by removing the present tense suffix of the verb.

Here are some examples:

Urdu Pronunciation English
"میں کل ناشتہ کھانے کا حوصلہ رکھونگا۔" "Main kal nashta khane ka hosla rakhunga." "I will have the courage to eat breakfast tomorrow."
"وہ اگلے ہفتے بازار جانے کی تیاری کرے گی۔" "Woh agle hafte bazaar jane ki tayyari karegi." "She will prepare to go to the market next week."

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

To better understand how to use future tense in a conversation, let's look at an example dialogue between two friends:

  • Person 1: "کل کیا کرنے والے ہو؟" (Kal kya karne wale ho?) (What are you going to do tomorrow?)
  • Person 2: "میں کل اپنی نئی کتاب پڑھنے والا ہوں۔" (Main kal apni nayi kitab parhne wala hoon.) (I am going to read my new book tomorrow.)
  • Person 1: "وہ کہاں سے لائی ہوئی ہے؟" (Woh kahan se lai hui hai?) (Where did you get it from?)
  • Person 2: "میں نے امریکا سے منگوائی ہے۔" (Main ne America se mangwai hai.) (I got it from America.)

Practice Exercise[edit | edit source]

Now, let's practice constructing sentences in the future tense. Complete the following sentences by using the appropriate verb form:

  • میں کل ____ ____ ____۔ (Main kal ____ ____ _____.) (I will _____ tomorrow.)
  • وہ اس مہینے کے اختتام تک ___ ____ ____۔ (Woh iss mahine ke ikhtitam tak ____ ____ ____.) (She will _____ until the end of this month.)
  • تم ____ ____ ____ ____ کر سکتے ہو۔ (Tum ____ ____ ____ ____ kar sakte ho.) (You can ____ ____ _____.)

Answers:

1. میں کل کتاب پڑھوں گا۔ (Main kal kitab parhoon ga.) 2. وہ اس مہینے کے اختتام تک کام کرتی رہے گی۔ (Woh iss mahine ke ikhtitam tak kaam karti rahegi.) 3. تم کسی بھی کام کو کر سکتے ہو۔ (Tum kisi bhi kaam ko kar sakte ho.)
