Ukrainian Numbers[edit | edit source]

Ukrainian numbers are similar to numbers in many other Slavic languages, and the pronunciation is not challenging. Below are the numbers from 1 to 10 in Ukrainian, along with the pronunciation and translation:

Ukrainian Pronunciation English
один odyn One
два dva Two
три try Three
чотири chotyry Four
п'ять p'yat' Five
шість shist' Six
сім sim Seven
вісім visim Eight
дев'ять dev'yat' Nine
десять desyat' Ten

As you can see, the numbers are quite easy to learn, and the pronunciation is not challenging.

Fun Fact: Ukrainians have a unique way of counting from 1-5 on one hand. They use different fingers to represent each number, as follows:

  • One - Index Finger
  • Two - Index and Middle Finger
  • Three - Index, Middle, and Ring Finger
  • Four - All fingers except Thumb
  • Five - All Fingers

This method of counting is called Chysla. Ukrainians use this method much like Americans use counting on fingers.

Interactive Dialogue[edit | edit source]

To help you understand how to use these numbers in context, we have created a dialogue for you to follow.

  • Person 1: Що це за ціна? (Shcho tse za tsina?) (What is the price?)
  • Person 2: Це п'ять гривень. (Tse p'yat' hryven') (It's five hryvnias.)
  • Person 1: Добре, я куплю це. (Dobre, ya kuplyu tse.) (Okay, I'll buy it.)

In this dialogue, we used the number 5 to describe the price of an item. This type of conversation is common in Ukrainian markets or stores.
