Now that you know the Thai numbers, let's learn how to count in Thai:

  • To count from 1 to 10, simply say the numbers in order: หนึ่ง, สอง, สาม, สี่, ห้า, หก, เจ็ด, แปด, เก้า, สิบ.
  • To count higher numbers, simply add the appropriate Thai number after the tens digit. For example, to count to 11, say "สิบเอ็ด" (sìp èt), which literally means "ten one". To count to 20, say "ยี่สิบ" (yìi sìp), which means "two tens".
  • When counting objects, use the classifier "ชิ้น" (chín). For example, to say "two apples", say "สองชิ้นแอปเปิ้ล" (song chín æpple).
  • When telling the time, use the word "นาฬิกา" (năa-lí-gaa) to mean "o'clock". For example, to say "3 o'clock", say "สามนาฬิกา" (saam năa-lí-gaa).

Heading level 2: Interesting facts[redaktə | mənbəni redaktə et]

Did you know that Thai numbers are based on the ancient Khmer numbering system? This system was developed in Cambodia and spread throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand. Thai numbers are also influenced by Sanskrit, the ancient language of India.

Another interesting fact is that Thai people often use their fingers to count, but they count in a different way than Westerners. Instead of starting with the index finger as "one", they start with the thumb as "one" and count up to "five" on one hand. To count higher numbers, they use both hands and count up to "ten".

Knowing how to count in Thai is an important part of learning the language and culture. Keep practicing and you'll be a pro in no time!
