Tamil Nadu, located in the southernmost part of India, is known for its rich culture and heritage. Tamil is the official language of the state and has a long history dating back to the 2nd century BCE. The people of Tamil Nadu have a long-standing tradition of art, music and literature, along with a passion for food and drinks. In this lesson, we'll explore some of the most popular drinks found in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.

Let's start with some popular drinks in Tamil Nadu:

In Sri Lanka, Tamil speakers have their own variations of certain drinks. For example, instead of coconut water, they drink 'Thambili' which is a type of king coconut water found on the island.

Alcoholic Drinks[edit | edit source]

It's important to be aware of the cultural and religious norms when talking about alcohol. In Tamil Nadu, for example, there are strict regulations around consuming and selling alcohol. However, in Sri Lanka, where Tamil speakers are predominantly Muslims, it is considered haram or forbidden to drink alcohol.

Person 1: நன்று தரும் பாகவாதி மாதிரி ஒரு குழம்பு ரொம்ப நல்லா இருக்கு (Naṉṟu tarum pākavāthi māthiri oru kuḻambu romba nallā irukku) (Arrack is like a very good curry)

Person 2: பீர் எத பின்னாலும் துரோகம் தான் (Bīr etha pinnaalum thurōgam thān) (No matter what, beer is harmful)
