Sudanese Arabic Grammar - Plurals

Hi Sudanese Arabic learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will focus on plurals in Sudanese Arabic. Plurals can be tricky in any language, but with practice and a few tips, you will master them in no time!

Basics[edit | edit source]

In Sudanese Arabic, plurals are formed by adding prefixes and suffixes to the singular form. The singular form of a word is called المفرد (Al-Mufrad), and the plural form is called الجمع (Al-Jama).

Some plural forms are irregular, meaning that they do not follow the standard rules. However, with practice and exposure to the language, you will start to recognize them.

To form the plural of most words in Sudanese Arabic, you need to know whether the word is masculine or feminine. In general, masculine words have one form, and feminine words have another form.

A common way to make a feminine noun plural is to add the suffix -āt or -āh. Here are some examples:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
مِصْرِيَّةٌ (Miṣriyyah) /mis.ri.ja.tun/ Egyptian (feminine singular)
مِصْرِيَّاتٌ (Miṣriyyāt) /mis.ri.jaː.tun/ Egyptians (feminine plural)

As you can see, the suffix -āt is added to the end of the singular form.

A common way to make a masculine noun plural is to add the suffix -īn. Here are some examples:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
مِصْرِيٌّ (Miṣriyy) /mis.ri.jjun/ Egyptian (masculine singular)
مِصْرِيِّينَ (Miṣriyyīn) /mis.ri.j.jiː.na/ Egyptians (masculine plural)

As you can see, the suffix -īn is added to the end of the singular form.

Exceptions[edit | edit source]

There are many exceptions to the rules for forming plurals in Sudanese Arabic. Here are a few examples:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
رَجُلٌ (rajul) /ra.dʒul/ man
رِجَالٌ (rijāl) /ri.dʒaːl/ men
ابْنٌ (ibn) /ibn/ son
أَبْنَاءُ (abnāʼ) /ab.naːʔ/ sons

In these examples, you can see that the plural form does not follow the standard rules for masculine and feminine words. Instead, they have irregular forms.

Vocalisation[edit | edit source]

Vocalisation, or تشكيل (Tashkeel) in Arabic, is the process of adding diacritical marks to Arabic text to indicate vowels. These diacritical marks are not always used, but they can be helpful when learning the language.

In Sudanese Arabic, vocalisation can help you to distinguish between singular and plural forms of a word. For example:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
يَدٌ (yad) /jad/ hand (singular)
يَدَيْنِ (yadayn) /jadajni/ hands (dual)
أَيْدٍ (aydin) /ajdin/ hands (plural)

As you can see, the singular form has no vowel marks, the dual form has two marks, and the plural form has one mark. This can be a helpful clue when trying to identify the plural form of a word.

Conversational example[edit | edit source]

Here is an example conversation to help you understand how plurals are used in context:

  • Person 1: هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ كُتُبٌ؟ (Hal ʻindakum kutubun?) (Do you have books?)
  • Person 2: نَعَمْ، عِنْدَنَا كُتُبٌ كَثِيرَةٌ. (Naʻam, ʻindanā kutubun kathīrah.) (Yes, we have many books.)

In this example, you can see that the plural form of the word كِتَاب (kitāb), which means book, is used.

Practice makes perfect[edit | edit source]

To fully master plurals in Sudanese Arabic, you need practice. You can practice by reading and listening to the language as much as possible. Additionally, you can try to form plurals for new words that you come across. By doing so, you will eventually become comfortable with the rules and exceptions.
