Don't miss the chance to check out these pages as you wrap up this lesson: Adjectives & Plurals.

What is "Have" in Sudanese Arabic?[edit | edit source]

"Have" is a verb that shows possession or ownership of an object, a trait, or a skill. It is frequently used when someone is trying to describe themselves, their families, or their friends.

In Sudanese Arabic, the verb "have" is translated to "عنده" (andه).

Example:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
عندي سيارة ʕand(i) sayyāra I have a car
عندك كتاب ʕandak kitāb You have a book
عندهم أولاد ʕind(h)um awlād They have children

"Have" in the Past Tense[edit | edit source]

To conjugate the verb "have" in the past tense, we use "كان عنده" (kān ʕind(h)o) which means "he had" or "she had".

Example:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
كان عنده سيارة kān ʕindh(o) sayyāra He had a car
كان عندنا ضيوف kān ʕind(e)na ḍ̱iyūf We had guests

"Have" in the Present Tense[edit | edit source]

To use "have" in the present tense, we add the possessive pronoun before "عنده" (andه).

Example:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
عندي كتاب ʕand(i) kitāb I have a book
عندك دراجة ʕandak dirāja You have a bike

It's important to note that Sudanese Arabic doesn't have the auxiliary verb "do" in the present tense like English. Therefore, we don't need to say "do you have" like we do in English. We only say "عندك" (ʕandak).

"Have" in the Future Tense[edit | edit source]

To convey the idea of "will have" or "going to have" in the future, we can use the phrase "راح يكون عنده" (rāḥ ykuun ʕindh(o)) which literally means "he will be having" or "she will be having".

Example:

Sudanese Arabic Pronunciation English
راح يكون لينا مال rāḥ ykuun līna maal We will have money
راح يكون عندو شغل rāḥ ykuun ʕind(o) shughl He will have a job

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: عندك سكين؟ (ʕandak sikīna?) (Do you have a knife?)
  • Person 2: عندي سكين. (ʕand(i) sikīna.) (I have a knife.)
  • Person 1: كان عندك حذاء أحمر؟ (kān ʕandak ḥadhaaʔ aḥmar?) (Did you have red shoes?)
  • Person 2: كان عندي حذاء أحمر. (kān ʕand(i) ḥadhaaʔ aḥmar.) (I had red shoes.)
  • Person 1: راح يكون ليك كتاب؟ (rāḥ ykuun līk kitāb?) (Will you have a book?)
  • Person 2: راح يكون عندي كتاب. (rāḥ ykuun ʕind(i) kitāb.) (I will have a book.)
