Hi Standard Moroccan Tamazight learners! ๐Ÿ˜Š
In this lesson, we will learn about adjectives in Standard Moroccan Tamazight. An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. For example: "The red car" - "red" is an adjective that describes the noun "car".
To understand adjectives, it is important to have a good understanding of nouns. If you need a refresher, check out the Grammar section on Standard Moroccan Tamazight nouns on the Polyglot Club website.

Types of Adjectives[edit | edit source]

In Standard Moroccan Tamazight, adjectives follow the noun they describe. There are two types of adjectives:

Descriptive Adjectives[edit | edit source]

Descriptive adjectives describe the characteristics of a noun. Here are some examples:

Standard Moroccan Tamazight Pronunciation English
ุชูŽู€ู€ุงุฌู taajou Crown
ูƒูŽุจููŠู’ู€ุฑูŽุฉ kabira Big
ุณูŽู€ู€ุฑููŠู’ู€ุนูŽุฉ sarii'a Fast

For example, in the sentence "The big house", "big" is the descriptive adjective that describes the size of the noun "house".

Possessive Adjectives[edit | edit source]

Possessive adjectives show possession, ownership, or a relationship to someone or something. Here are some examples:

Standard Moroccan Tamazight Pronunciation English
ุฃูŽู†ูŽุง ana My
ูƒูŽ ka Your
ู‡ููŠูŽ hiya Her

For example, in the sentence "My book is on the table", "my" is the possessive adjective that shows ownership of the noun "book".

Placing Adjectives[edit | edit source]

In Standard Moroccan Tamazight, adjectives usually come after the noun they describe. For example, "The red apple" is translated to "ุงู„ุชูุงุญุฉ ุงู„ุญู…ุฑุงุก" (At-Tuffahah Al-Hamraa). However, in cases where there is a series of adjectives that all describe the same noun, the adjectives are placed before the noun. For example, "The big, red apple" is translated to "ุงู„ุชูุงุญุฉ ุงู„ุญู…ุฑุงุก ุงู„ูƒุจูŠุฑุฉ" (At-Tuffahah Al-Hamraa Al-Kabira).

Comparing Adjectives[edit | edit source]

In English, we add "-er" or "more" to adjectives to make comparisons. In Standard Moroccan Tamazight, comparatives and superlatives are formed using the word "ุฃูŽูƒู’ุซูŽุฑูŽ" (Akthara) which means "more" and "ุฃูŽูƒู’ุซูŽุฑูŽ ู…ูู†ู’" (Akthara Min) which means "more than". Here are some examples:

  • Comparative: "My car is faster than your car"

"ุณูŽุฑูŽุนูŽุฉ ุณูŽูŠู‘ูŽุงุฑูŽุชููŠ ุฃูŽูƒู’ุซูŽุฑูŽ ู…ูู†ู’ ุณูŽุฑูŽุนูŽุฉู ุณูŽูŠู‘ูŽุงุฑูŽุชููƒูŽ" "Sar'aat Sayyaratii Akthara Min Sar'aat Sayyarataka"

  • Superlative: "This is the biggest park in the city"

"ู‡ูŽุฐูŽุง ุงู„ู’ุญูŽุฏููŠู’ู‚ูŽุฉ ุงู„ู’ูƒูŽุจููŠู’ุฑูŽุฉ ูููŠ ุงู„ู’ู…ูŽุฏููŠู’ู†ูŽุฉ" "Hatha Al-Hadeeqah Al-Kabira Fil Madinah"

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: ู‡ูŽุงุฏู’ูŠูŽุง ูƒู’ุจููŠู’ุฑูŽุฉ ูˆูŽ ุญูŽู…ู’ุฑูŽุงุก

(Hadiaa kabira wa hamraa) "This is big and red"

  • Person 2: ูˆูŽ ู‡ูŽุงุฏู’ูŠูŽุง ุตูŽุบููŠู’ุฑูŽุฉ ูˆูŽ ุฎูŽุถู’ุฑูŽุงุก
