Hello everyone !
This course is devoted to Arabic sentence types.
Before you start, know that there are two main types of sentences in Arabic:
- The verbal phrase
- The noun phrase
- What is the difference ?
- How will this help me?
- How are they constructed?
These are the questions that this course will attempt to answer.
Verbal Phrase[edit | edit source]
Construction of the verb sentence: [Verb] + [Subject] + [Complement]
Features:
- The verb phrase begins with a verb (in 99% of cases)
- The pronoun can be implicit (in case it is already indicated by the form of the verb)
First, the verb (عمل, ينمو…)
Then the subject, it can be:
- of a personal pronoun (أنا, أنت, هو, هي, نحن, انتما, هم …)
- of a proper noun (يوسف,محمد …)
- etc …
Finally the complement, it can be:
- of a circumstantial complement (غدا, أمس …)
- etc …
Examples:
- يشرب يوسف عصير البرتقال (Youssef drinks an orange juice)
What is the verb phrase used for? :
- It is used to indicate an event or an action.
- We use it when we want to emphasize the event!
Nominal sentence[edit | edit source]
Construction of the noun phrase: [Subject] + [Attribute]
- It does not contain a verb (it is implied)
- It begins with a noun (or a pronoun, etc.)
So first the subject, it can be:
- of a personal pronoun (أنا, أنت, هو, هي, نحن, انتما, هم …)
- of a proper noun (يوسف, موحمد …)
- etc …
Then the attribute, it can be:
- of an indeterminate qualifying adjective (عظيم, جميل …)
- of a circumstantial complement (غدا, أمس …)
- etc …
Examples:
- الدار كبيرة (the house is big)
- أنا جميلة (I am beautiful)
What is the noun phrase used for? :
- It is used to indicate certain information on a subject (I am beautiful, I am tall, I am strong, ...).
- We use it when we want to insist on the subject!
