Arabic-Language-PolyglotClub.png

Hello everyone !

This course is devoted to Arabic sentence types.

Before you start, know that there are two main types of sentences in Arabic:

  1. The verbal phrase
  2. The noun phrase
  • What is the difference ?
  • How will this help me?
  • How are they constructed?

These are the questions that this course will attempt to answer.

Verbal Phrase[edit | edit source]

Construction of the verb sentence: [Verb] + [Subject] + [Complement]

Features:

  • The verb phrase begins with a verb (in 99% of cases)
  • The pronoun can be implicit (in case it is already indicated by the form of the verb)

First, the verb (عمل, ينمو…)

Then the subject, it can be:

  • of a personal pronoun (أنا, أنت, هو, هي, نحن, انتما, هم …)
  • of a proper noun (يوسف,محمد …)
  • etc …

Finally the complement, it can be:

  • of a circumstantial complement (غدا, أمس …)
  • etc …

Examples:

  • يشرب يوسف عصير البرتقال (Youssef drinks an orange juice)

What is the verb phrase used for? :

  • It is used to indicate an event or an action.
  • We use it when we want to emphasize the event!

Nominal sentence[edit | edit source]

Construction of the noun phrase: [Subject] + [Attribute]

  • It does not contain a verb (it is implied)
  • It begins with a noun (or a pronoun, etc.)

So first the subject, it can be:

  • of a personal pronoun (أنا, أنت, هو, هي, نحن, انتما, هم …)
  • of a proper noun (يوسف, موحمد …)
  • etc …

Then the attribute, it can be:

  • of an indeterminate qualifying adjective (عظيم, جميل …)
  • of a circumstantial complement (غدا, أمس …)
  • etc …

Examples:

  • الدار كبيرة (the house is big)
  • أنا جميلة (I am beautiful)

What is the noun phrase used for? :

  • It is used to indicate certain information on a subject (I am beautiful, I am tall, I am strong, ...).
  • We use it when we want to insist on the subject!
