South Levantine Arabic Vocabulary - Colors

In this lesson, we will learn the names of colors in South Levantine Arabic. Colors are important in our daily lives and can also be used to describe objects, emotions, and even personalities. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify primary colors and use them in your daily conversations. Basic Colors[edit | edit source]

Let's begin with the basic colors, the primary colors which are red, yellow, and blue. In South Levantine Arabic, they are as follows:

South Levantine Arabic Pronunciation English
ุฃุญู…ุฑ ['a.hmara] Red
ุฃุตูุฑ ['a.sfar] Yellow
ุฃุฒุฑู‚ ['azra'] Blue

Some examples in context:

  • Person 1: ุงู†ุง ุจุฏูŠ ูุณุชุงู† ุฃุญู…ุฑ (Ana biddi fstn 'ahmar) (I want a red dress)
  • Person 2: ู‡ุงุฏ ุฃุตูุฑ ุฌู…ูŠู„ (Had 'asfar jameel) (This yellow one is pretty)

Of course, there are more colors than just the three primary colors, so let's move on to secondary colors and other shades and tones.

Secondary Colors[edit | edit source]

We get secondary colors by mixing two primary colors together. In South Levantine Arabic, the secondary colors are as follows:

ุจูุฑูุชูู‚ูŽุงู„ููŠู‘ ููŽุงุชูุญ ['bur.tu.qa:.li: fa:.tih] Light Orange

Examples:

  • Person 1: ุดูˆ ุงู„ูˆูŽู† ุงู„ู„ูŠ ุจุฏูŽู‘ูƒ ุฅูŠุงู‡ ู„ู„ุตูŽู‘ุจุญุŸ (Shoo al.wann illi biddak iyyah lissa.bah?) (What color do you want to wear tomorrow morning?)
  • Person 2: ุจุฏูŠ ุฃู„ุจุณ ูุณุชุงู† ุจูุฑูุชูู‚ูŽุงู„ููŠู‘ (Biddi 'albas fstn 'bur.tu.qa:.li:) (I want to wear an orange dress)

  • Person 2: ู„ุจุณุช ุฌูŠุจุฉ ุดูู…ู’ุจูŽุฑููŠู‘ ูˆูƒุงู†ุช ุจุชู†ุงุณุจ ู…ุน ุจู†ุทู„ูˆู†ูŠ (Libist jeybah 'shum.bari: wakant betnaasib ma' bnTiluni) (I wore a maroon jacket that matched my pants)
