To show possession in South Levantine Arabic, "have" is used with the following pronouns:
South Levantine Arabic | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
عندي (ʿandi) | ʿand-i | I have |
عندك (ʿandak) | ʿand-ak | You have (male) |
عندِك (ʿandik) | ʿand-ik | You have (female) |
عندو (ʿando) | ʿand-o | He has |

Example dialogue:
- Person 1: عندي سيارة جديدة. (ʿandi sayaara jadiida.) (I have a new car.)
- Person 2: عندك شقة في المدينة؟ (ʿandak shiqa fi l-madina?) (Do you have an apartment in the city?)
To show past actions or experiences, "have" is used with the following structure:
Subject + عند + past participle
For example:
- عندي تجربة رائعة. (ʿandi tajriba ra'iia.) (I have had a wonderful experience.)
- عندَك فكرة زيارتكِ للأردن؟ (ʿand-ak fikra ziyarat-ik lil-'urdun?) (Have you ever been to Jordan?)
Note: In South Levantine Arabic, the past participle is formed by adding the prefix مِـ (mi-) to the verb in the past tense.
Example dialogue:
- Person 1: عندي دورة في تعلم اللغة العربية. (ʿandi dawra fi taʿallum l-lughat al-ʿarabiya.) (I have a course in learning Arabic.)
- Person 2: أنا عندي خبرة في تدريس اللغات. (ʾana ʿandi khabara fi tadris al-lughat.) (I have experience in teaching languages.)
Interesting Facts[edit | edit source]
- In South Levantine Arabic, the pronoun "I" is often omitted when using "have". This is because the verb "عند (ʿand)" already indicates that the subject is referring to themselves. For example, instead of saying "أنا عندي كتاب" (ʾana ʿandi kitab) meaning "I have a book", you can simply say "عندي كتاب" (ʿandi kitab).
- In many Arab countries, it is considered impolite to ask about possessions or wealth, so be mindful of the cultural nuances when using "have" in conversations.
