As a Slovenian language teacher of 20 years, I have seen how mastering vocabulary related to everyday life and activities can help students gain confidence and fluency in the language. In this lesson, we will focus on household items and furniture vocabulary to help students become more comfortable describing common items found in homes. We will also touch on how to describe the color, material, and size of these items. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to confidently navigate a furniture store in Slovenia!

Vocabulary[edit | edit source]

Below is a list of common household items and furniture in Slovenian. Take note of the pronunciation and English translation for each item.

Describing Household Items and Furniture[edit | edit source]

When describing household items and furniture, it's helpful to be able to describe the color, material, and size. Here are some examples of how to do so in Slovenian:

  • bela (white)
  • črna (black)
  • siva (gray)
  • rdeča (red)
  • modra (blue)
  • zelena (green)
  • rumena (yellow)
  • oranžna (orange)
  • roza (pink)

Material[edit | edit source]

  • les (wood)
  • usnje (leather)
  • tkanina (fabric)
  • kovina (metal)
  • steklo (glass)
  • plastika (plastic)

Size[edit | edit source]

  • majhna (small)
  • srednja (medium)
  • velika (large)

Here are some examples of how you can combine these descriptions to create more detailed descriptions:

  • Ta postelja je velika in ima rdeč okvir. (This bed is large and has a red frame.)
  • Ta naslonjač je majhen in iz usnja. (This armchair is small and made of leather.)
  • Miza za nočno omarico je srednje velikosti in ima bel lakiran les. (The bedside table is medium-sized and has a white lacquered wood.)
