Let's Count[edit | edit source]

Slovak numbers are not too difficult to learn. Once you have learned the words for numbers 1-10, counting to 100 is a breeze. Let's begin with the basics, shall we?

Slovak Pronunciation English
jeden ['jɛdɛn] one
dva [dva] two
tri [trɪ] three
štyri ['ʃtɪrɪ] four
päť [pɛtʲ] five
šesť ['ʃɛshtɕ] six
sedem [ˈsedɛm] seven
osem [ˈɔsɛm] eight
deväť ['dɛvḁtʲ] nine
desať ['dɛsḁtʲ] ten

Some fun facts about Slovak numbers: - Slovak numbers from 11 to 19 are formed a bit differently than in English. For example, number 11 is "jedenásť," which means "one + ten." - Slovak uses the decimal system, which means the numbers are divided by zeros (10, 100, 1000, etc.). - Slovak numbers are gendered, which means they change form based on the gender of the noun they modify. For instance, if you want to say "two apples" you would say "dva jablká," but if you want to say "two cakes," you would say "dve torty."

Let's practice our counting skills with a little dialogue:

  • Person 1: Kolko je tri plus tri? ([How much is three plus three?] pronounced ['kɔlkɔ je trɪ plus trɪ]?)
  • Person 2: Šesť. ([Six, pronounced ['ʃɛsht]])
  • Person 1: Správne! ([Correct!], pronounced [sprɑːvɲe])

More Practice[edit | edit source]

Now that we know how to count, let's practice counting various items. Here are some examples:

  • jeden pes ([One dog], pronounced ['jɛdɛn pɛs])
  • osem jabĺk ([Eight apples], pronounced [ˈɔsɛm jablʲk])
  • tri automobily ([Three cars], pronounced [trɪ automobɪlɪ])

And if you want to practice your numbers further, find native speakers and ask them any questions!
