Sindhi Vocabulary - Count to 10

Hi Sindhi learners! 😊
In this lesson, you will learn to count from one to ten in Sindhi. Numerals or numbers are basic, important and extensively used in our daily life. Whether you are traveling to a Sindhi speaking country, having conversations with your Sindhi-speaking friends, colleagues or family or just want to impress someone, learning how to count in Sindhi language will help you in all situations. As a Sindhi language teacher with 20 years of experience, I will illustrate the lesson with cultural information and interesting facts, using a simple and informal tone, analogies to illustrate complex concepts, and of course, emojis! 😀

Basic numbers[edit | edit source]

Let's start with the basic numbers in Sindhi:

Sindhi Pronunciation English
هڪ hik One
ٻين biin Two
تين tiin Three
ٺاري taari Four
پنجهو panjho Five
ٻاڄ chha Six
هفتو hafto Seven
آٺو aatho Eight
نو no Nine
دس das Ten

Usage[edit | edit source]

Now, let's see these numbers in action with some examples:

  • Person 1: هڪ ٻاش پنجھو. (hik chaṃd panjho) (*one six five*)
  • Person 2: ڪيئن محسوس ڪئين جو رقم آهي؟ (keēn mahsus kēēn jo raqm āhī?) (*how does it feel to have that amount?*)

Or

  • Person 1: مونھ ٻڌو نند آهي. (mōn̊h bījo nan̊d āhī) (*I slept for two hours.*)
  • Person 2: پڏهن پڏهن گهرجی نه خاکی ڏيکا آهي ٽو ٻڌو نند توهان جئيندڙ سان. (pdhn̊ pdhn̊ ghrcī n̄ḥ khākī dēkā āhī , ṭō bījo nan̊d tōhān jēndr̥ ssān||) (*I see that you have had a good sleep.)

As you can see, in Sindhi, numbers come after the object or the person you are referring to. Unlike English, there is no plural or singular form in Sindhi. For instance, you would say ten apple as دس سياب instead of ده سيبہہ.

There are more than one way to write Sindhi numerals and there is no globally accepted standard. The above-mentioned Sindhi numerals are written in Sindhi-Arabic script, which is commonly used in Pakistan. In India, numerals written in Devanagari script are used.

Interesting facts[edit | edit source]

In Sindhi culture and tradition, numbers play an important role. Different numbers are associated with different meanings and are used in different traditions, for example:

  • In Sindh, the number nine is considered very auspicious, and a bride is given a gift believed to have nine commodities to ensure her prosperous married life.
  • The Sindhi community also celebrates Chaliho Sahab, a 40-day festival. During this festival, people take vows to fast and pray in the name of their deity. They visit temples and other religious places while walking or performing other holy activities of their choice, counting from one to forty.
  • Mehndi or Henna also plays an important role in Sindhi culture. It is a paste made from leaves and used to create temporary body art on different occasions. It is said that the longer the henna color stays on the skin, the stronger the bond between the couple, so the bride tries to keep the color for as long as possible. Counting plays an important role in this tradition, as the henna stays on for different lengths of time depending on the duration of the counting ritual, which varies among different regions.
