In this section, we will learn the Sanskrit words for some common non-alcoholic drinks.

Sanskrit Pronunciation English
जलम् jalam Water
मधु madhu Honey
चायः chāyah Tea
कॉफ़ी koffi Coffee
नारिकेल जलम् nārikela jalam Coconut water
नींबू पानी nīmbū pānī Lemonade
शर्करा जलम् śarkarā jalam Sugarcane juice
जलजहरी jalajahrī Soda water

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: चायः कुप्यां देहि। (chāyah kupyāṁ dehi.) - Give me a cup of tea please.
  • Person 2: कुपः विधिः। (kupaḥ vidhiḥ.) - How would you like your cup?
  • Person 1: मधु चायः। (madhu chāyah.) - Honey tea.

Alcoholic drinks[edit | edit source]

Now, we will learn the Sanskrit words for alcoholic drinks. Please remember to consume alcoholic beverages responsibly and legally, and only if you are of legal drinking age.

Sanskrit Pronunciation English
मद्यम् madyam Liquor/Alcohol
बीरः bīrah Beer
रक्षि rakṣi A distilled spirit similar to whiskey
वाइनः vāinah Wine

Cultural information: Alcohol consumption has been documented in ancient Sanskrit literature, such as the Rigveda, dating back to at least the 2nd millennium BCE. However, alcohol was also highly regulated and taxed in ancient India, and excessive consumption was frowned upon in many communities.

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: बीरं कुप्यां देहि। (bīraṁ kupyāṁ dehi.) - Give me a beer please.
  • Person 2: किं प्रकारः। (kiṁ prakāraḥ.) - What kind?
  • Person 1: हेफेवाइजः। (hefevāijah.) - Hefeweizen.
