Northern Kurdish Vocabulary - Drinks

Hi Northern Kurdish learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn the names of some popular drinks in Northern Kurdish. Knowing these words will help you during your travels in Kurdish-speaking areas or ordering in a Kurdish restaurant. Don't forget to practice with native speakers and ask them any questions you may have!

Non-Alcoholic Drinks[edit | edit source]

Northern Kurdish has a rich vocabulary of non-alcoholic drinks. Let's learn some of them:

نوشە noʃə juice
چای tʃaj tea
قاوە qawə coffee
شیرینی ʃiriːniː syrup
شراب ʃarab syrup / drink
آب ab water
دووچە doːtʃ(ə) soda
گازی gaz(i) sparkling water

  • Person 1: دۆژە
  • Person 2: چی، ئەوەی کرێدەوەی؟؟
  • Person 1: نوشی جیانیەکەم بیە
  • Person 2: ویا، چاوی کەچانن؟
  • Translation
  • Person 1: Hi
  • Person 2: Hi, what can I do for you??
  • Person 1: Give me my favorite juice
  • Person 2: Sure, which kind of juice do you want?

Alcoholic Drinks[edit | edit source]

In Kurdish culture, alcoholic drinks are not as common as non-alcoholic ones. However, there are still a few popular drinks that you might come across:

بیرە bire beer
شاندی ʃandiː wine
چوك tʃok raki

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: دلت خێرا دەکاتەوە؟
  • Person 2: نەخێر، تەنها بیرەی بەردەستەوە لە چەندین جێمارە بەرگ مەدەوەن.
  • Person 1: دەمەزرێنیم بۆتە تەنها دوو شاندی کە دەستۆک مادەون.
  • Person 2: لابەست باشە، هیەڵنیرەوەی خواردنی تەنها بەیتی بەردەستەتەوە
  • Translation
  • Person 1: Are you feeling good?
  • Person 2: Yes, I am good. They have only a few types of beer on the menu.
  • Person 1: Let's order then only two glasses of wine that they have.
  • Person 2: Alright, drinking responsibly is only healthy at home.
