This character is both a radical and a phonetic. It represents a person “standing” 立 on the ground. It is a radical in 站 zhàn “stand”, a phonetic in 粒 lì (measure for grains of rice), and a component of 位 wèi (polite measure for people). Distinguish 立 from 位 and 站.
