照 zhào shine; illuminate - Mandarin Chinese

Definition[edit | edit source]

Radical is 火 huŏ “fire”, which is written 灬 and is referred to colloquially as 四点火 (四點火) sìdiăn huŏ “four dots of fire” when it occurs at the bottom of a character. Phonetic is 召 zhào “call together.” The third component is 日 rì “sun” , which also gives a hint as to the meaning. Distinguish 照 from traditional 魚 yú.
