双(雙) shuāng pair in Mandarin Chinese

Definition[edit | edit source]

Radical of the simplified form is 又 yòu. The simplified form 双 represents the idea of “pair” with two 又. Radical of the traditional form is 隹 zhuī “short-tailed bird.” The explanation of the traditional form is that two “birds” 隹隹 held in one “hand” 又 make a “pair” 雙. Note that 又 is an ancient form of 手 shŏu. Distinguish simplified 双 from 又.
