Let's start with some basic phrases that you can use to express surprise in Macedonian:

Idioms[edit | edit source]

Here are some idiomatic expressions in Macedonian that you can use to express surprise:

  • Откако Тузлата чукнула, казанот за манго рикнал. (otka-ko Tuzla-ta chuk-nula, ka-zan-ot za man-go rik-nal.) - This means that a seemingly unrelated event has led to a surprising outcome.
  • Кој денешна вечер успееше да заспие, утрешна олтишанишва не можеш да уловиш. (koj de-ne-shna ve-cher us-pe-e-she da za-spie, utre-shna ol-ti-sha-nish-va ne mo-zhesh da u-lo-vish) - This means you won't be able to grasp tomorrow's plans/happenings/life, because you've had a dream about last night's events.
  • Го направи мајчиното учење. (go na-pra-vi maj-chi-noto u-che-nje) - This means that you did something that you thought you could not do.

Proverbs[edit | edit source]

Here are some proverbs in Macedonian that are used to convey surprise:

  • Лудоста секогаш доаѓа од здравите глави. (lu-do-sta se-ko-gash doa-ga od zdra-vi-te gla-vi) - This means that actions that seem crazy or risky are often taken by the most serious or responsible people.
  • Лажливецот е мајстор кога лага. (lazh-li-ve-cot e ma-is-tor koga la-ga) - This means that a liar becomes an expert only when he lies.
  • Споро оди брзо доаѓа. (spo-ro o-di br-zo doa-ga) - This means that haste makes waste.

  • Person 1: Чувам дека нашето фудбалско натпреварување привлече поголемо собирање од предвиденото. (Chuvam deka nasheto fudbalsko natprevaruvanje privleche pogolemno sobirane od predvidenoto.) (I heard that our football match attracted a larger crowd than expected.)
  • Person 2: Не можам да верувам! (ne mozh-am da veru-vam!) (I can't believe it!)
  • Person 1: Најдов на подарок стара слика од децата на момчето кое ме посети на работа. (Najdov na podarok stara slika od decata na momcheto koe me poseti na rabota.) (I found an old picture of the children of the boy who visited me at work.)
  • Person 2: За мене?! (za me-ne?!) (For me?!)
