It expresses our thoughts and feelings about a particular topic or situation. Expressing likes and dislikes[edit | edit source]

When you want to express your likes and dislikes in Kannada, you can use the following phrases:

ನನಗೆ ಈ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟ "nanage ee vishayada bagge ista" I like this topic
ನನಗೆ ಈ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟವಿಲ್ಲ "nanage ee vishayada bagge istavilla" I don't like this topic
ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಿಯತಮರು ಇಂಥಾ ಮೊದಲಿನ ಸಿನೆಮಾಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆ "nanna priyatamru intha modalina cinemagalanu nodalu hogutteyene" I am going to watch these old movies, which are my favorites.
ನನಗೆ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ "nanage chennagide" I like it
ನನಗೆ ಅದು ಇಷ್ಟವಿಲ್ಲ "nanage adu istavilla" I don't like it

Dialogue

  • Person 1: ನನಗೆ ಈ ಕತೆ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಇಷ್ಟ ("nanage ee kathe bahalashTu ista") (I like this story)
  • Person 2: ಹೌದು, ನಾನೂ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಅನ್ನುತ್ತೇನೆ ("haudu, naanu hAgeye annutteyene") (Yes, I agree)

Agreeing and disagreeing[edit | edit source]

When you want to agree or disagree with someone's opinion in Kannada, you can use the following phrases:

Kannada Pronunciation English
ಹೌದು, ನೀವು ಕಂಡುಕೊಂಡುದನ್ನು ನಾನು ಸಮರ್ಥಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ "haudu, neevu kandukonduvannanu samarthistutteney" Yes, I agree with what you have observed.
ನಾನು ನೀವು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ವಿರೋಧವಾಗಿ ನೋಡಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ "naanu neevu helidduvakkige virodhavaagi nODalu yatnisuttiddene" I am trying to look at it from a different perspective.
ನಾನೇಕೆ ಹಾಗೆ ಮಾಡಬಾರದು? "naanekhe hAge maadabaaradu?" Why shouldn't I do that?
ನೀವು ನನ್ನ ಹೇಳಿಕೆಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಥರಲ್ಲ "neevu nanna helikege samartharallA" You do not agree with my opinion

Dialogue

  • Person 1: ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಮಂಜಸವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ("nanna abhiprAyavu nimm abhiprAyadondige samanjasa vaaguttade") (My opinion is consistent with your opinion)
  • Person 2: ಹೌದು, ನೀವು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿದೆ ("haudu, neevu heliddu nanna abhiprAyakke sariyaagide") (Yes, what you said is correct according to my opinion.)

Expressing uncertainty[edit | edit source]

When expressing uncertainty or lack of opinion in Kannada, we can use the following phrases:

Kannada Pronunciation English
ನನಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟವಾದದ್ದು ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ "nanage istavadadu iruvudilla" I don't have any preference
ಅದು ನನಗೆ ಖಾತರಿಯಾಗುವುದರೊ "adu nanage khaatariyaaguvudarO" It may be a risk for me.
ನಾನು ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಯಲು ಆಗದಿದೆ ("naanu nijavaagi tiliyalu aagadide") (I am not sure)

Dialogue

  • Person 1: ನೀವು ಹೇಗೆ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಿಸುತ್ತೀರಿ? ("neevu hegde abhiprAyisuttira?" - How do you think?)
  • Person 2: ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ನಿಮ್ಮದರ ಜೊತೆ ಸರಿಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ತಿಳಿಯದು ("nanna abhiprAy nimadar jote sarihoguttadeye illave tiliyadu") (I am not sure whether my opinion is the same as yours or not.)

Asking for opinions[edit | edit source]

To ask somebody's opinion in Kannada, we can use the following phrases:

Kannada Pronunciation English
ನೀವು ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಏನು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತೀರಿ? "neevu adara bagge enu bhavishuttIre?" What do you think about it?
ನೀವು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿ "neevu nimm abhiprAyavannu heli" Please tell me your opinion.
ನೀವು ಯಾವುದನ್ನು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವೆಂದು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತೀರಿ? "neevu yavudannu pramukha abhiprAyavenDhu bhavishuttIre?" What do you think is the main opinion?

Dialogue

  • Person 1: ನೀವು ಅನ್ಯಾಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಏನು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತೀರಿ? ("neevu anyayada bagge enu bhavishuttira?" - What do you think about injustice?)
  • Person 2: ಅನ್ಯಾಯವು ನಮ್ಮ ಸಮಾಜ ಮೇಲೆ ತುಂಬಾ ದೊಡ್ಡ ವಿವಾದವನ್ನು ಕಾರುತ್ತದೆ ("Anyayavu namma samaja mEle tumba doDDa vivAdavanN kaaruttade") (Injustice causes a big debate in our society.)
