Iranian Persian Grammar - Negation

Hi Iranian Persian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will cover the topic of negation in Iranian Persian. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to negate verbs, adjectives, and nouns, and use them in sentences. Along with the grammar, we will also delve into Persian culture and traditions to make the learning experience more fun and engaging.

Take a moment to explore these relevant pages as you conclude this lesson: Lesson 22: Complex sentences and ..., Conditional Mood, Lesson 8: Direct object pronouns & Negations.

Negating Verbs[edit | edit source]

In Iranian Persian, in order to negate verbs, we need to add the word "نه" before the present tense verb. It is similar to the English word "not". For example:

Iranian Persian Pronunciation English
من می‌روم‎ man miravam I go
من نمی‌روم‎ man nemiravam I don't go

Here are some Persian cultural facts related to transportation:

- The most popular transportation in Iran is the Metro. The Tehran Metro carries around 3 million passengers daily, making it one of the busiest metros in the world. You can learn more about the metro and its culture by searching "Tehran Metro" on Wikipedia.

- If you visit Iran, you may encounter little taxis called "Darbast" which are very common especially in small villages. Unlike other vehicles, "Darbast" is permitted to carry goods, so it is a common means of transportation for traders. To learn more about Iranian transportation, visit "Transport in Iran" on Wikipedia.

Now let's put this into a dialogue:

  • Person 1: آیا تو می‌آیی؟ (āyā to miāyī?) (Are you coming?)
  • Person 2: نه، من نمی‌آیم. (nae, man nemiyām) (No, I'm not coming.)

Negating Adjectives[edit | edit source]

Adjectives can also be negated in Iranian Persian. To negate an adjective, we need to add the word "نه" before the adjective. For example:

Iranian Persian Pronunciation English
من غمگین هستم‎ man ghamgin hastam I am sad
من نغمگین هستم‎ man naghmgin hastam I am not sad

Here is an interesting fact about emotions in Persian culture:

- Iranians are known for being warm and hospitable. When they have guests, it is important for them to provide the best possible food and create an inviting ambiance at home. You can learn more about Iranian hospitality and customs by visiting "Persian customs and traditions" on Wikipedia.

Here is a dialogue featuring negated adjectives:

  • Person 1: امروز هوا خوب است. (emruz havā khub ast) (Today the weather is nice.)
  • Person 2: نه، امروز هوا نیست خوب. (nae, emruz havā nist khub) (No, today the weather is not nice.)

Negating Nouns[edit | edit source]

In some cases, we may need to negate a noun in a sentence. To do this, we need to add the word "نه" before the noun. For example:

Iranian Persian Pronunciation English
من سیب دارم.‎ man sib dāram I have an apple.
من نه سیب دارم.‎ man nae sib dāram I don't have an apple.

Here is a cultural fact about Persian cuisine:

- Persian cuisine is known for its traditional dishes like "Kebab koobideh" and "Gormeh Sabzi". Iranians love their food, and "Lavash bread" is a common side dish that is present in most Iranian meals. If you want to learn more about Persian cuisine visit "Persian cuisine" on Wikipedia.

Here is a dialogue featuring negated nouns:

  • Person 1: آیا شما آب دارید؟ (āyā shoma āb darid?) (Do you have water?)
  • Person 2: نه، من نه آب دارم و نه بطری. (nae, man nae āb dāram o nae botri) (No, I don't have water, nor a bottle.)
