In this lesson, we will dive into the world of education and learn the Hungarian vocabulary related to it. Let's get started! Don't forget to use Polyglot Club to practice with native speakers and improve your skills. Find native speakers and ask them any questions you might have.

Basic education[edit | edit source]

Let's start with the basics. In Hungary, primary education is mandatory and lasts for 8 years. Here is the basic vocabulary you need to know:

olvasás [olvaʃaːʃ] reading
írás [iːraːʃ] writing
számolás [saːmolaaʃ] math
rajz [raʒ] art
  • Person 1: Elkezdődött az új tanév! (<translation in English>: The new school year has started!)
  • Person 2: Igen, izgalmas lesz az ABC tanulása. (<translation in English>: Yes, learning the alphabet will be exciting.)

Secondary education[edit | edit source]

After completing primary education, students can choose to continue their secondary education in a general or vocational school. The following vocabulary will come in handy:

  • Person 1: Milyen tantárgyakat választasz az új iskoládban? (<translation in English>: What subjects will you choose in your new school?)
  • Person 2: Az én kedvencem a történelem és a kémia. (<translation in English>: My favorites are history and chemistry.)

Hungary has a great higher education system and offers a wide range of courses and degrees, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Here is the vocabulary you need to know:

előadás [ɛløaːdaːʃ] lecture

  • Person 2: Igen, nagyon érdekel az egyetemi kutatás és szeretnék professzor lenni. (<translation in English>: Yes, I'm very interested in university research, and I want to become a professor.)
